| been looking for nightvision scopes for a while.thought i had it down to the D740 2ms.then i started thinking about the rear mounted NVD(pvs14 and such).that way i could use it on my other scoped weapons, wear it on a head mount unit or just carry it.the question is what type of red dot type scopes can it(pvs14 and such) be used with?yea i know about the EO551+552,ainpoints comp 2 thrue 4 and the T1 (i think).i am wondering if there are others out there?i tried searching here and other places but had no luck.any kick in the right direction would be great.thanks mike oh just wondering if anyone has tried the rear mounted NVD on a regular scope without a illuminated crosshair's? |

I started using my MUM w/ a Burris FastFire and it is absolutely awesome. At night the dot automatic brightness adjustment will be way down so it works great. And w/ the fastfire (it's like a doc optic, j-point, etc) there is NO perceivable housing obstruction like w/ an aimpoint m2. It's just like a dot floating out in space, VERY COOL. I'll be receiving a micro t-1 this week so I can't wait to play w/ that too!! As for mounting it to scopes w/o illuminated reticles, it is absolutely doable. In fact, IMHO you do NOT want an illuminated scope unless it is a fancy schmidt and bender that has super-low settings to facilitate this very application. I have been using a pvs-14 and now a MUM behind my non-illuminated scopes for three years now and absolutely love it. The image is awesome regardless of whether it's mounted behind Simmons, Bushnell, Nikon, or Burris glass. The versatility of a monoc is undeniable. This past fall I started monkeying w/ helmet mounting the monoc to look through magnified glass. It can be tricky but w/ practice it is actually not that hard. This offers several advantages 1. Don't have to spend $200 on a proprietary piece of aluminum (or injection molded plastic) called a universal adapter. 2. You don't have to aim your weapon everywhere you want to scan (if you have two monocs this is a moot point). 3. You can walk in the dark AND be able to aim your weapon w/o a bunch of attaching/detaching going on. I originally had a gen2 riflescope and wound up NEVER using the gun it was on because I could ONLY use it at night. To me, this is a huge disadvantage. I wound up selling it after I got my first gen3 monoc. Also, w/ a monoc you can use it behind a rangefinder as long as the range indicating elements are not illuminated (I have a cheap bushnell and it works awesome. If you have gobs of cash, get both. If you want one item to do many things, get the monoc. |
| cool, thanks for the advice.was looking at the burris fast fire and the bushnell.(kinda looks like the acog).think i will be buying the fast fire after hearing that.now only scope with illuminated retucle i have is springfield armory.it seems to gave a very low setting, barely see it.i hope that is what it is for.and as far as the EO goes.i thought it might have gotten an obstructed view when you look thrue it with a NVD.that's too pricy for me anyway so no big deal.now i don't meen to get off topic but how is the recoil going to be with the shallow eyecup on the NVD?i will be putting this on a 308 and a 284 win. mag(kinda like a 450 bushmaster).just wondering if i have enough space for recoil? |
| oh almost forgot.Mr kickass,do you think it would be better to go with the 3rd gen instead of the gen2 shp.(it's called the GT14 DEP)they say it is very close to the 3rd gen specs.it's rated at 51-64 lp/mm.i was planning on getting scope and mono goggle but not enough money for both.but i do have enough money for the 3rd gen ? |
| No matter what anyone says about gen2 SHP it does not have the photoresponse of gen3, period. It can approach and occasionally exceed gen3 in SNR and res (allegedly) but photoresponse is the "rate limiting step" in all this. If you have the money for 3rd gen, do it... period. Trust me you will NOT regret it. Especially w/ mounting behind magnified optics. Behind magnified optics, light is even more scare than normal, so photoresponse is more of your friend here than ever. Think of it this way, you can either start off by getting the good stuff, or you can buy lesser, usually lose money on resale of it, and ultimately wind up spending money on the good stuff anyway, or buy the good shit now. In your case, considering you stated that you can go gen3, there is no other viable and wise option. Enjoy! |
And w/ regard to 308... There are those who say omni-IV and below are up to it and those who don't. I, for one, will not chance it... too expensive, and i only get one. This weekend I will be load testing subsonic 308 and if weather permits, NV testing it also. From all the countless articles I have read and people I have talked to about the matter, omni-4 is the end all be all of performance vs. durability. This should factor into what kind of tube you choose for what you want to do. Maybe some here will comment on this but I don't use my NV on anything hotter than 7.62x39, period. |
Good advice and the most I go is a 6.8SPC with no issues. VERY close to the 7.62 x 39. |
You can run a dedicated G3 scope on a 308 no problem. Be it an 18mm tube or 25mm G3 tube one. |
