I already posted this in the OPTICS area. No result, so here goes

A friend in law enforcement sent me these pictures for me to look at and tell him what this thing is. These pictures are the way he sent them to me. he blacked out some numbers cause he doesn't know if he is supposed to have this. He also said that it isn't very big. It fits in the palm of his hand. I am guessing it is for night vision. He found it in the trash at the police department. If anyone can point me in the right direction, thanks.

I asked him if he thought it was broken.  He replied that he talked to the guy that threw it away, and it came in a box of stuff they got for free from the gov't.  It had a lot of NV stuff in it.  He threw it away because it didn't fit on anything they had!!

Here is the label on the container it came in

And here are two different POV's

Thanks a lot guys

get the missing parts of the NSN (national stock number) and use one the the fed.gov's nsn lookup tools

Punch the NSN into google and see what turns up. It looks like it was disposed of through DRMO because of the de-mil code. From the nsn prefix it seems to be part of an IR/laser sight from something. SS

Hey that looks like 1/2 of one of those NVGs that Special Forces uses.  It uses 2 of those tubes on a low profile mount and you look through the angle glass eyepieces with the intensified image overlaying what your eyes can see through the eyepiece.  Supposedly with this system you don't get the depth perception problems like you do through regular PVS-5,7,14 setups.  I've seen one or two pics of these things and they are supposedly ultra rare and not widely issued.

I'll try to find a pic and the military designation.

Well it looks sort of like 1/2 of a AN/PVS-21 but the objective lense assembly looks to long.    Hmmmmmm.....  I dunno, an earlier version or a pilot version maybe?

More info on the AN/PVS-21 and pics on the manufacturer's web site:
