| How visible is the chevron from a TA-31F while looking threw nvg's? I have only seen one picture and I could hardly make out the chevron. |
| Don't know myself, but a regular member of this board performed an experiment using NODs and the ACOG w/ and w/o tritium a while back. IPSC_guy was the one who did it, don't exactly recall the results but i'm sure he does. Not sure it's the same, but I have used modern gen3 w/ a trijicon tripower and saw zero distortion, but it may be different on ACOG's. |

Yep it was me. I had the Tritium removed from my TA 31. While a great improvement it is not ideal. A point of interest is the fiber optic still picks up quite a bit of light at night. Where ya get into to trouble is on very dark nights with an overcast sky. The reticule being dark becomes very hard to pick up. On of my back burner projects is to make and IR led Light to illuminate the reticule as needed. I have found that the PVS 14 with a 3X on it used in conjunction with a Tasco Optima (GASP it's not NV compatible) works better than the ACOG PVS 14 combo. Now that being said I run an OMNI 4 mil spec tube as it is much more durable than a thin film tube so it can stand up to non NV sights with out burning a permanent spot on to the tube. I've done a little work with this. Most of it is actually in the book to the ACOG or RCO's Duct Tape or Riggers Tape is the key to it all. To brighten the RCO use a "mini-chem light", you'll probly have to find a bong shop, that sells the little 2" chem lights, they're about 1/8"x2", the Chem Light can be controled by masking it off and tapeing it down to the top of the fiber optic tube. All light collecting properties can be removed by masking the tube totally off. I've found that for the most part, the small chem light should be covered about 3/4 of the way, then tapped down on the fiber optic. There should also be a hood between the PVS-14, once again duct tape works great... this sort of dedicates the set up. The RCO should be moved forward onto the handguards or split between the upper and handguards, and pvs behind it, this takes time to establish the proper eye relief. This also requires rezeroing... it's a painfull process, I haven't hand much luck retaining a perfect zero moveing RCO's between different spots on the upper and between the handguards, but I'm dealing with KAC non-free floating rails, it maybe different on a mono-rail type weapon, the difference in POA/POI isn't much, but it's enough that I rezero, pretty much talking 1/4"-1" at 100m. The key to the whole situation is controling the light that comes in, on 1/2 mooned nights it seems like a total mask still gives a decent chevron, but you don't see the BDC below it. For what it is really worth, target identification with a PVS-14 in my opinion is limited to about 70-100m depending, so an Aimpoint is the ideal optic to pair with a 14. I've had great luck with Comp M3 & M4 Aim Points, with the PVS-14 behind, and (gasp) infront of the Aimpoints... by the book you are supposed to put 14's to the rear, maybe I've just been delt an armory full of flukes on this set up working... what I want to try next month is putting a 14 in front with a 3x mag on it if it will fit. On the sad side of life, I saw it already mentioned... I was given a cheap BSA green battery illuminated scope 3-9x32, took it to the range and zeroed it with a 14, this set up worked great, but I don't think it was 'battle ready', but for a cheap scope it would have made a good sentry post weapon site. |
You know I used to fight with this all the time before I went to the continuous rail of the MRP. I have been SUPER lucky in that my POA POI shift between the two mounting points is tiny. In fact I do not rezero when I move my ACOG forward to mount the 14 behind it. I thought about the small chem light deal and it will be on the list of "to try" items but thanks for reminding me.
