Gen II, are they any good? Pros and cons? What are they worth today? Would you buy one? |
| I own a Gen II PVS-4, it depends on what you want to do with it. I own several Gen III devices and once you use Gen III, Gen II sucks, however, if that is all you have it is fine. I find that it doesn't gather enough light to make it good for fine shooting past a couple hundred yards while my Gen III products can reach out to 600 yards easily. I have been considering buying a Gen III tube to upgrade my -4, but it is an expensive proposition. Now that I own a .50, it works well on that weapon for vehicle sized targets out to extended ranges. I hope that helps. |

PVS-4's are good units IMO if the tubes are still good. Frankly the 25mm tube gives it a much better looking resolution than 18mm tubes, so they look quite clear. Plus the cadiatropic lens system basically is the fastest lens type you can buy. But while most Gen3 systems have larger light losses due to using glass lenses they also have a far better PR so they can get away with it. The PVS-4s actually work quite well out to 400+ yds IMO depending on lighting conditions and terrain of course. If you can get a Gen3 tube or a newer Gen2+ tube for them they are awesome. They hold zero are rugged. The only real minus points are they are big/heavy. Another plus they have are the illuminated reticle options with BDC's for common calibers (556, 7.62, plain crosshair, .50cal, M203 etc) Generally I'd say they are well worth the price paid if you can get a decent deal on one. |
