Awhile back I was working with some ammo that was "accidently" working as a DIM tracer.  It proved to be a very interesting test at that time...Also at that time not a lot was in text on DIM tracers.  Lately I've seen a few articles pop up. This Swedish company have popped up of late in the public arena www.nammo.com/templates/Technologies.aspx?id=130 A few years back, Nordic Ammunition Company (Nammo)  came out with the first 5.56 armor piercing DIM tracer that is made up of a tungsten core and a steel jacket.  They also use a special powder to reduce muzzle flash besides a standard flash hider.  Two of the biggest break throughs I see Nammo has accomplished is this,
1). No backwards illumination by your own tracers. Prevents enemy equipped with NVD’s to evaluate your firing position
2). Low burning temperature - Minimized risk for starting fires at ranges or in the field – no disturbing flames blinding gunners using NVD’s. No emergency calls to fire department saves costs and valuable training time at night.

On a side note, their Hybrid Propulsion and their Hypersonic Velocity technology also has come a LONG way as well.  I've seen some demonstrations of this hyper velocity small projectiles do some amazing devastation!

wow IR tracers!

I wouldn't have thought of that in a million years.
I wonder how much that would cost if it were ever allowed on the civilian market?

I dont like the low-temperature thing though, Brushfires are cool!

I have a few in 7.62x51.  Lavender (purple?) painted ogive, as I recall.  I have not fired any, with or without NVDs.

No, they're just like a regular tracer, but are purple on the front.

A-Max, V-max and Ballistic Tips look like dim tracers when viewed thru night vision. The plastic tip heats up and causes a faint glow.
ETA: You will need a magnified night vision optic to see the "glow"

I was hesitant!  ....

What Wes states is true....I was doing a whole host of work a few years back on this phenomenon.
