.. One thing I've noticed with the PVS-14 is that it seems to have a somewhat short "focus area".. What I mean is that when it's focused to a certain distance, there's not much distance before and after that point that seems in focus.. Of course, this is comparing it with a scope.. It acts more like my small Leica's, in a way.. Plus the weather's been kindof crappy for really testing this thing..

.. Do the D760/740's have the same limited "in focus area/range".??   Do they have parallax adjustment.?      Thanks.!!           Jake

What you are experincing is called short depth of field. It is an effect of the very "fast" (read wide aperature) of the lens. The optics are designed to gather the most light possible. C mount camera lenses that have an adjustambel aperature in them actually allow for adjustment of the depth of field. As the aperature decreases the depth of field will increase. NOW there is a loss of light but that is the trade off. The ability to work close with your NVD on your head is actually somewhat limited. Try somehting complex like change a tire on a vehicle with your NVD. It is a REAL challenge.

I am playing with different day covers with the hole enlarged to try and see if I can improve the depth of field.

Yep Depth of field. Essentially it is the zone of sharp focus that extends 1/3 in front and 2/3 behind the "Plane of sharp focus." There is another cool guy term for ya.

Keep us posted on your nocturnal observations.
