Looks like I will have enough money saved up to buy my  new 740 weapon sight here in July and with that time fast approching makeing the choice is getting confusing between the SHP 2+ and the B grade gen 3 alpha tube which are the same price. I would like to see any pictures anyone may have of a 740 or other Nv mono using the dep SHP 2+ tubes in starlight only conditions Rural area NO MOON or City close by which helps to Illum tha area.  Also any real field use info with the SHP tube like varmint hunting whatever. My main concern is it's abilty to make a shootable image out to 75 yards without IR on a dark night in a rural area. Anything father out than 75 yards I would use IR to help illum the target but would perfer not to risk being seen at close ranges with the IR red glow which has happened before in the past. At longer ranges the glow seems not to be a problem.

Vic just posted some pics in the D300 topic with SHP tube vs gen3 tube under those conditions. In general if you want low light performance goo with the Gen3 tube (grade B means there will be spots but it shouldn't be a huge problem unless they are sitting on top of your reticle)

Here is some recent PIG shoot results of the D-740 Gen 2 SHP...I need to be in Texas!

Hello all,
Vic hooked me up with a D740 with the DEP SHP tube, and I must say I am very impressed.I sighted the scope in at 125 yards in no moon light.I had no problem seeing the target(10inch black target on white back ground)but when I used my illuminator(Da'Torch) , wow what a view.No blems, and a very sharp image. I did compare the D740 to my PVS 14 in a very dark area with no moon.(deep valley with lots of trees, around a large stock tank) Of course the PVS 14 is brighter, by not by much. The PVS 14 had more noise, where the D740 had no noise with a darker image.

I shot a few raccoons that I called on the other side of the tank(80 yards) with and without the illuminator.I am very pleased with my D740 and I will have more info to come as it will get a full work out!

I went out and sat on a large milo field late Saturady night to see what was out and about.Well ,there were 3 nice size pigs. I shot the first a 312 yards, and took the second at 270 yards. The third got away.It was a very bright night, the moon was directly overhead and almost full, which gave me unlimited viewing distance.

Here is some GEN 2 SHP pics with 740 and a MUM.

Thanks Vic are those Pics with moon light or not? Also since you have seen both the SHP and alpha B grade tubes how does the SHP 2+ do with star light only in a rural area. Does it get the job done at ranges around 100 yards without IR or is IR a must at 100 yards on a star lit night no moon in a rural area? On the subject of Texas is great I live right on the border and have a few thousand acres leased in Texas and few thousand leased in Oklahoma. Texas hunting laws are much better than Oklahoma as far as night hunting is concerned. Also there is alot of wild hogs down there that need some lead in their diets.

You will have no problems viewing/shooting under 100 yards on moonless nights with the D740 SHP.I am heading to the ranch shortly for 5 days, I am planning on taking some pics for this post.

The pics I depicted with the MUM had NO moon help at all, and the 740 had a quarter moon that was obstructed with haze and clouds.  As Wes stated, there will be NO problem shooting a 100 yards with the 740 SHP with no IR illumination. If you look very close at the 740 pic above, I placed the cross hairs (dot) over a 12"x12" paper target.  The target stand itself is 14" wide x 36" high. (A cardboard man silhouette from the waist up), all this at 200M.

Btw, Wes1 is the one who took the pics above in regards to the PIG and weapon above and gave the feedbback. His ranch also spans a GREAT many miles! Hope this helps.

Your welcome Terry, thank you for the kind words.  When I first set out in NV in 1994, I went through sooo much pain with no valid literature and pics and also lost money and time. Since I started demos with the LE and military folk several years ago, it was still apparent, the literature and info was very limited.  Since I went public, I am very happy to share all the info I have on NV systems and will continue to do so.

Ok, here's some pics.PLEASE NOTE: I am very leary of posting these pics, as they don't do my night vision justice.MY CAMERA SUCKS!
PVS 14 Gen 3, 1/2 moon covered by clouds.(tree is 100 yards)

D740 Gen 2+SHP, 1/2 moon covered by clouds(tree is 100 yards)

D740 Gen2+SHP No moon, heavy cloud cover, VERY DARK( tractor at 100 yards)

Thanks Wes1 for the time you took. I have also took a few pics through my 3 gen stuff by just sticking the camera behind the Nv and have had mixed luck with the pictures so I know it always looks better through the NV alone without the camera.

Hey, those pics look familiar!!! Especially the bottom one.."Don't hold high Vic, don't hold high..."I think that missed yote is still runnin' for the border from 300!

That no moon pic should indeed look brighter on what I have experienced through the tube of course and also my camera shots.  Your first two came out very well.  You set the digi on auto and canceling the flash?

Thanks for the pics Wes!

Edited to add....Did you use the "Camera Zoom" on 740cpics?  After looking at the pics, it could appear so?  Did you also pop the suttered eye guard off? I do not use the zoom feature at all, just auto at 1x.  When I experiemented with the zoom on the camera, I always got grainy and darker shots.  Hope this helps.

The camera was on the same selection as the earlier pics.I took the day pic the next day. It's my camera, I have compared my camera to others(a friend's Fuji does very well) and mine always has a darker image, especially with no moon and cloudy.Like I said I could see the tractor fine. Terry get the D740 SHP, you won't be dissapointed.
