Postmaster General and a local police report helped make my wasr 2 show up. I started by talking to my local post office, they got the ball rolling for me.

Bummer, especially if a transferable goes missing. The money grows back, but when the Registry loses a transferable, it's one more irreplacable loss to the pool.

I've had UPS and FedEx lose silencers before, and yeah – no one really cares. First time it happened, I thought ATF was going to get INVOLVED. Like "call out Scotland Yard and auditors" involved.

But my IOI just said "Yeah, for 'disposition' but "lost in shipping" and note the carrier in your A&D books". I'm like "That's it?"

Local cops are like "What? Youse want us to fly down to the UPS Worldport global hub in Louisville, Ky and dust the entire transit center for prints?". :D

We used to ship and receive weapons for our armory via USPS almost daily. We had to watch them be locked in the cage before leaving the PO. We always shipped the bolts separately from the receivers. Mk19s, M240s, M249s, mortars, etc.

None ever got lost.....

LOL, USPS lost a can for us and couldn't give a shit less since it was "signed for". ATF only took the report and the local police were worthless as well. If anyone finds a Vidar serial number 066 gets a free can on us, no questions asked.

Glad they are trying to help. I bought a barrel off the EE last year and it sat in a transport trailer for two weeks... I sure hope that your package is just sitting and this sparks movement.

Registered mail has to be locked up in a special cage every night. There is only one place in the Detroit plant where it is supposed to be.  At this point I dont think it was misplaced.  I'm just hoping getting the congress critters on them will get them to admit it was stolen.

This is ridiculous.

I thought it was having a rough time shipping a barrel this month to Kentucky. Mailed it via USPS February 7th from Wayne Mi. Went to Detroit then on the 15th showed up in Indiana. On the 19th I filed a request online. The 23rd the Kentucky post office called me and said their system shows it in Indiana and they will email the building to look for it. Few hours later I get an update that it is now in Texas. Today I see it arrived in Tennessee.

Trust me, I have. Wanna help?

Call this number:  1 (800) 275-8777

keep repeating the word "complaint" until you get a response.  Say "NO" when they ask if you have a smart phone, so you can talk to a person.
Tell them you need to file a complaint with the United States Postal Inspection Service about the theft of a machine gun.   They will need the tracking number and the address it was being shipped to.

Sadly not surprising.  While it hasn't happened to me with a firearm, I keep waiting for it to.  I once had a set of binocular NODs sit in San Diego for 2 weeks, shipped via FedEx from TNVC.  I finally got to talk to an actual person at FedEx and told them that the contents were ITAR controlled and they should expect a call from the State Department within the week.  Magically the package appeared in WV the next day with no "departure" info listed in the tracking.  Just, "Arrived at destination depot" the next day.  In WV.  From CA.  It's astounding just how BAD pretty much every shipping service is.

I heard unofficially that it was stolen.  They caught the guy who stole it, and it is now evidence.  I was told to file the insurance claim because I'm never getting it back.   I'm betting they are not going to tell me they have it until after the time expires on the claim so the government can steal it from me officially.   if it's true that they have it, I don't want the insurance, I want the gun back.   I should have that as an option.

But, I know nothing officially and probably never will because it will make everything easier for them if I cash their insurance check.

As a former ARC for the USPS, let's say I was not impressed with what I saw at my "worksite".  Including FEDERAL LABOR LAW VIOLATIONS and ostracising an employee.  Any wonder where the term "going postal came from"?   Most of the people at the local USPS office in my local town are awesome people.  Every USPS worksite is a "fifedom" on its own IMHO.

I had another boss at a different company, wonder why I turned in my notice to leave.  After 18 months without a single missed day of work or a late report to work, no write-ups, etc.  My direct lead was a woman, and the other employee was a woman.  Every time I walked up, they would both stop talking.  I watched them use their cellphones, talk to family and friends in the store for more than 30 minutes at a time on the clock, too.  When the boss complained about stuff not getting done, they both blamed me, too.  When I left, the lead was fired 2 months later for poor performance, and the other employee left for reasons disputed by many. Personally, I think without the lead, she was not happy having to pull her own weight consistently, which I found ironic because she was a very capable person.

Today, I blame the workers and employers for letting them get away with bad behavior and job performance overall.  I have had real problems with FedEx, UPS, and USPS delivery services.

$5K of ammo left on the street, not on the porch, out of sight, etc which required an adult signature.  The insurance complaint demonstrated a single line in the signature box.  A new home-based ammunition seller opened up as well!    A different delivery service delivered my brand new Apple iPad, but I could not find it.  Turns out it was submerged in water filled ditch!    The Amazon "driver" in a ~25-year-old 1-ton dually crew cab pick-up risked getting shot at ~10:45 PM in my rural area with high left and drug issues after driving up my 3/8th of a mile long driveway to give me a small Amazon package.  Or were the two people in the 1-ton dually pickup just 'casing me and my home/barns' for a robbery?

The common theme?  Bad employees and bad employers accepting and permitting bad behavior!

On one hand, I'm glad to hear they caught the guy and are prosecuting. OTOH, you should get your property back.  Maybe this is where your congressman can help?

I went through a similar situation with a Jeep that got stolen. I got a good news/bad news call that they actually found it within the week. The bad news was it was recovered in a drug bust and was evidence in multiple crimes. It took me a year to get it back and that was only because a friend of a friend had the ear of a county commissioner.

I would be tempted with a lawyer regarding an “illegal takings” case.

As you said, it’s more than the insurance, as things stand a MG on the registry is irreplaceable.

Destruction all because of government incompetence is ridiculous.

Seems like you should be able to get it back when they're done w/ it as evidence.  Although w/ the way some of that stuff goes that could be years or decades before they released it.   (Should not that's the way it works.   )

Who told you that you're not going to get it back?  Though the federal government and state governments can hold items as evidence, they are absolutely required by law to return stolen property to the rightful owner once the case is adjudicated.  You need to keep digging and find out which law enforcement agency is in possession of the evidence.  Then get a lawyer to send them an appropriate letter reminding them of their duties.  You won't have to spend much on the lawyer so long as you hire one that is familiar with this area of the law.  Meanwhile, file the insurance claim, but don't sign anything that gives the USPS possession of your property.  You can refund them the money once you get your property back.

HONORABLE ROBERT E. LATTA
MEMBER OF CONGRESS
1045 N MAIN ST STE 6
BOWLING GREEN, OH 43402

Dear Congressman Latta:

This correspondence is in response to your inquiry on behalf of your constituent, Steve Thompson, concerning a lost/stolen package.
Upon investigating the initial Service Request # 85980018 is currently pending review with the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS).
The Postal Inspection Service is the law enforcement of the United States Postal Service.  Complaints alleging mail tampering or theft come under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Postal Inspection Service.  This inquiry does not require you to contact either the Inspection Service or the Postal Service. A Postal Inspection Service representative will contact you if this inquiry requires further investigation.
Please note, information provided in a mail theft complaint and reviewed by the Inspection Service does not always result in a criminal investigation.
Information concerning the investigation is not internally shared and unfortunately, there is no current information to be shared. I appreciate the concern on behalf of your constituent but would like to ask that he be patient as the investigation is being conducted. My apologies that he was not notified of the current status of his service request.

Thank you for your inquiry on behalf of constituent, Steve Thompson.

Sincerely,

I'm reading the small print right now in the insurance, but I'm pretty sure if they give me a check for $25K that gives them possession of my property.

It's a catch 22 of sorts - Sure they'll give it back after I hire an attorney, and in 3 years when the criminal case is over.  I don't really have $25K to spend on something that's going to maybe come back years from now.  I dont even know what condition it's in at this point.   The USPS/Govt has it all set up to steal my property.

It's a lost machine gun, of high value. A little more than a lost package.

And there's no need to contact?  Maybe don't lose a registered package that contains a machine gun?  There's damn sure is a reason to contact.....

Yeah I’m calling BS that the USPS and or the Office of the Inspector General says we caught the guy, we have your property, but just file a fraudulent insurance claim because you’re not getting your property back.

Doesn’t pass the sniff test. I’ll stand by for something a little more official than an “unofficial” heads up.

The letter simply says an investigation in underway. The insurance advice is pure speculation. Insurance applies to unaccountable items... not items sitting in some evidence locker.

A "Criminal Investigation" is just that... an investigation. That's a FAR CRY from your assertion via "unofficial source" that the package has been determined to have been stolen and they got the guy.

Have you been contacted by a LE agency from the Postal Service? Have you given ANY investigative statements? I can assure you if your package was indeed determined to have been "stolen" and they have someone who did it, a criminal case would be forthcoming which means you are the victim and there are things a victim does in connection with a criminal case prosecution.

I think you have the cart before the horse and you're making assumptions. It could very well be stolen but there's no way you're filing a claim for loss when there is no actual loss... the item would be in an evidence locker somewhere and not unaccountable.

I'm betting they are not going to tell me they have it until after the time expires on the claim so the government can steal it from me officially. seriously?

No one has told me anything about the items status.  I had to have a member of congress get to someone to tell me they cant tell me anything.    EVERY PERSON I talked to on the phone from USPS customer service told me it's time to file an insurance claim.

I know the published tracking went dead in Detroit 23 days ago and there is an unresolved missing mail search from 2 weeks ago.
I also know for fact from a post office operations manager that this issue has gone to OIG - which is not noted publicly.  I know 2 local postmasters have reached out to Detroit contacts and have been ignored.  One offered to drive to the Detroit plant to personally check on the package and was told no.

The rules for filing a claim are they must be filed no sooner than 15 days, and no later than 60 from the mailing date.  Is it time to file the insurance claim?  Will the idea of them handing me a $25K check get them to start telling me anything?

Situation sucks... that's for sure. Stop speculating until you get an OFFICAL response from an OFFICAL source.

The part in red...
I heard unofficially that it was stolen.  They caught the guy who stole it, and it is now evidence.  I was told to file the insurance claim because I'm never getting it back.

Now you say no one has told you the status... which is it?

I was just commenting on your post suggesting some informal source told you it's stolen, they got the guy, and to file a claim as your item is in evidence and you won't be getting it back. That was your claim, in essence, and we both know that's not exactly true now is it?

As I see it your on the hook to a customer for 25K... I'd file and make the customer whole and deal with a criminal investigation and recovered property if/when that actually happens.

You say your brother works for the post office?  Ask him if 2 different POOMs and a Postmaster tell me something in confidence/off the record would that be something I should believe.    People talk to each other, and people hear things that they aren't supposed to tell other people.

Why did someone from the post office tell my Rep  "it is a criminal investigation, and they will not share any information until the investigation is closed."

No one from the post office officially told me there is any investigation going on.

All they tell me is there is an open "Missing Mail Search", but at this time I should file the insurance claim.

Call the ATF and get them investigating on where a registered machine gun went via the Postal Service. Sounds like probable theft.

Why did someone from the post office tell my Rep  "it is a criminal investigation, and they will not share any information until the investigation is closed."

No one from the post office officially told me there is any investigation going on.

All they tell me is there is an open "Missing Mail Search", but at this time I should file the insurance claim.

Who ever told you what you claimed you were told:

I heard unofficially that it was stolen.  They caught the guy who stole it, and it is now evidence.  I was told to file the insurance claim because I'm never getting it back.

Is full of shit... don't listen to unofficial sources who are full of shit. That's not how it works.

File the insurance claim and get made whole.  That's what insurance is for.  Worry about who ends up owning it after the fact.

When my old man worked at a State Farm regional office in the 70s/80s/90s, stolen items that were recovered after the claim being paid out belonged to the insurance company and were sold via silent auctions to employees.  We got a Schwinn 10-speed touring bike, an Onkyo quadraphonic receiver, and a Ford LTD that way.   Dad said that the company was good about selling sentimental items back to the original owner in exchange for the payout amount.  IIRC, he got his "kitchen table" FFL so he could buy & sell guns from those auctions.

Sorry, but I have no idea how it works with an NFA item today.

I filed the insurance claim last night.  Hopefully it will drag out long enough for someone at the USPS tell me what's going on. We'll see what happens.

I think I read earlier in this post you reported it stolen at a local or federal level?
If that’s the case maybe you collect the insurance today and maybe 5 years from now it shows up in a local or state investigation and they contact you and return it to you.
I’ve heard of that happening in the past with stolen guns.
Will it happen with a machine gun?

I file the theft/loss report with the ATF on the 18th.
I have no idea how anything works with the insurance.   I filed the insurance claim last night, I suspect that will prompt some communication with the USPS.

Since this happened in miShitgan, it might be relevant to mention that Governor Whitmer recently signed a law, which dictates that stolen firearms are no longer to be returned to their lawful owner, and are to be destroyed instead. This happened while the demonrats had full control of the MI. Government, and they passed Red Flag laws and other gun control during that time period.

I'm not sure whether this new law would apply to a stolen NFA weapon or not, but felt it worth mentioning.

Most guns can be replaced , putting something back into the registry , not so easy.

Not a fan of USPS and something of value like a MG I would be hard pressed to hand it over to USPS if it was free delivery. Really sorry to hear of a transferable MIA.  File the insurance claim and fingers crossed the asshats make good on it. They love to sell you insurance , paying it out not so much.

This is one instance where the BATFE / FBI should step up and give you a straight answer and return your property if its in possession by another LE agency.

If it's part of a criminal investigation, I don't know if anyone will confirm they have it in their possession.

Hopefully someone from the insurance side will tell me what my options are if they pay out the claim and I get a phone call next year that they have my UZI.

I just came there to say "that fucking sucks". I had to ship a transferrable once for repairs; it was rather unnerving. Hope you get it back.

At this point, I'd take the insurance check and put it behind me. Life is too short.

You were selling it anyway right?  You're just selling it to a different buyer now (the insurance company). Let the insurance and USPS worry about it now and move on.

My customer would rather have the UZI than a refund from.  I'd rather have the UZI than an insurance check.  But you are correct, It's insured, the claim has been filed.

As the victim of a felony theft, at some point, someone should be contacting you to verify the item in evidence is yours. I would expect the new Michigan law only applies to state and local agencies and not federal agencies like the Postal Inspection Service/OIG or ATF. Once federal criminal cases are adjudicated, items held in evidence are typically returned to the rightful owner with some exceptions that I don't think would apply to your firearm.

From my understanding of how insurance works is that if you take the insurance money for a loss, that item is now the property of the insurance company.  They paid you for it, now it’s theirs.  You don’t get both the money and also the item back later on.

If your car is stolen/totaled and found you get the option to buy it back after the insurance has paid out.   Does the USPS want to take a $25K loss if they find my property?  It's still registered to me, they can't sell it to anyone else. I'm not sure they can even possess it.  If the ATF is involved I would hope I'd be contacted.
