| I recently purchased a Comanche 410/45LC pistol. It's a single shot, break action. I was wondering if I could register this as an aow and make a smooth bore 410 barrel for it or possibly even a 20 gauge barrel, somewhere between 8 and 10 inches long. |

So what would make this a DD and a shotgun like a serbu 12 gauge a AOW? Quoted:

Serbu's do not start out as "shotguns", but as Other Firearms. *********Edit to add: Sorry, a smoothbore in 20ga could certainly be an AOW. A rifled bore might be a DD. Taurus showed a Judge in 20ga at SHOT before someone told them it was a DD when it had a rifled bore. |

Ok. So this being a 45 LC pistol, if I were to go 20 gauge smooth bore, it WOULD be an AOW? Yes. A smoothbore handgun is an AOW. A firearm with a rifled bore over .5 inch without a sporting purpose is a DD. Generally speaking, shotguns with a barrel over .5" (20, 16, 12 gauge, etc) are not considered DD's because the BATFE has ruled that they have sporting purposes. There are, of course, exceptions, such as the Stryker-12/StreetSweeper, which are classified as DD's. Here is the BATFE's justification for ruling them DD's. Handguns such as the Taurus Judge and S&W Governor are not considered AOW's or DD'd because they have rifled barrels less than .5" in diameter. Were they sold with smooth bores, they'd be AOW's. If they had rifled barrels greater than .5", they'd be DD's. |

ATF has been rather generous in applying the sporting shotgun exception to anything that takes commercial shotgun shells, but they don't have to be. ATF can classify anything over .50 a DD on a whim - see the striker 12 and streetsweeper. |
