While reading a thread in GD a question fluttered across my feeble mind .....
Do all the Class III laws/rules apply to guns that can only fire blanks? |
|
It does not apply to blank-firing-only machinegun props. Generally, the gun has to be designed so it cannot EVER be converted into something which will fire a projectile, and it cannot duplicate the receiver of an existing machinegun.
This has been accomplished in the examples I'm aware of, by having it seat the blank cartridges backwards, so even if you tried to drill it out and give it a barrel, the round would be aimed back at you. Even with those rules followed, any that have been approved were back in the olden days, and I doubt ATF would approve any new prop machinegun designs now. |

I've seen new prop machine guns modeled after current weapons. It was on Spike TV, they were showing the making of a few new shoot-em-up movies and the two that caught my eye were prop/blank only H&K 416, and a prop/blank only FN SCAR 16s. They also had some real versions of those weapons too in case they were needed for closeups, so maybe the firearms provider had his SOT and manufactured the props and kept control of them himself via being on premises during the shoot. I have no clue, I was just entranced by the gun porn! |

They can make/own new machine guns, and other NFA weapons as needed, then rent them out for studio use. They do have to keep an employee at the shooting location during filming whenever the weapons are there. |
