I had a custom suppressor manufactured last year. My dealer received the can in February and we completed the form 4 shortly afterwards, on March 9th.  Well I called him about a week ago to find out WTF was up and he said that there's been a mix-up at in W VA and paperwork has been lost??

Has anyone heard of this problem? My dealer also alludes that he has direct access to a dedicated examiner who gave him this info...? Is that the case? Do dealers have a dedicated examiner that they call?

All sounds a bit strange to me. This guy BS'd me before, about 3 years ago on another transfer. He pulled the same line of shit and I eventually came to find out that he had mistakenly sent the paperwork to Chicago and it was returned to sender (him...) about 8 months later.  I gave the guy a second chance as he's a nice enough guy but I'm painfully starting to get the impression that there may be degree of mental retardation at play.

The MO has been cashed but that took approx 6 months.  In the 10 or transfers I've done over the years my experience is that the checks are cashed lighting fast...the actual transfer may take a while but the BATF gets their money asap. I'm just wondering if he again sent the paperwork to Chicago.

Appreciate any input...other than calling me a dumb ass for using him a 2nd time.

Do you have your serial number?  Call NFA Branch yourself and ask about the status.  (304) 616-4500.

Thanks. I understand the status piece and will check on it when I get a breather.

My real question is if my Class 3 dealer is feeding me a line of BS. According to his "inside sources" there's been a massive paperwork loss in W VA and it's taking months to find it all.  Has anyone else heard of any loss of paperwork due to some type of move?

I am a dealer and I have not heard of any "massive loss of paperwork."  Not saying they didn't lose your papers, it is possible.  They lost a demo letter (but not the Form 3) I sent in a few weeks ago.  Was your check cashed?

Check was cashed but it took 6 months.....I think the guy screwed up again and is covering his tracks with a cock and bull story.

Haven't heard of a paperwork loss, but ever since July 1 examiners are assigned by state, so dealers will only have one examiner who handles their F4's to customers.

Also ask them when it was received, although I don't know if they will tell you that.

I don't think they CAN tell you as they don't track that sort of thing. Best they could tell you was when it went pending.

I've had checks take that long and longer to get cashed. Not normal, but I've had it happen. Did you make the mistake of letting your dealer mail off all the forms and the check? I never do that. No reason to do that. It could sit on their desk for weeks(if not months) before they get around to mailing it. I get them to sign it, and I'm on my way. That way I know when its done, and that its done right.

This would be my guess.  It got covered up on his desk for 6 months, he found it and mailed it about a week before your MO got cashed.  I had a similar situation once, though only about a month delay in mailing.  The only way to avoid this is as damcv62 suggests, control the paperwork yourself.

My first form 4 was "lost" by the BATFE.  What actually happened (I think) is the dealer forgot to send it in.

I mean, don't get me wrong, they do loose paper work. But this has been on a very small percent of the times that I've heard dealers tell customers that the ATF lost the stuff, and I know for a fact that some dealers will tell them this when it is not the case. I'd always suggest that you get your paper work filled out, and leave the dealer with it. Plus send a personal check so you know when it was mailed, and that they got it from your check being cashed.

I would say that at this point speculating on how it got lost is a waste of time.  Call NFA and find out if its pending or not.  If its not then yeah something is wrong.

My immediate guess would be that your dealer lost it or sat on it for a while and is just trying to cover his tracks.  Happened to me years ago when I transferred a Ruger AC556

he sat on it and tried to blame it on NFA.

but at this point just call and see where its at and find another dealer for future transactions.  Thats where the soup sticks to the spoon at this point.

Thanks all.

I'm not real worried about when I receive this can. Check was cashed back in August and I'm sure it'll be in-bound in a month or two, if not sooner.

The point is that the dealer concocted this huge story about an NFA building move, examiners being switched around and how his "contact" let him know that "tons" of forms were lost/misplaced.

What my dealer really meant to tell me was "I laid your paperwork on my desk, it got covered up and it took 5 and half months before I found it". No worries...he's a nice guy and I occasionally buy a gun or some ammo from him. For future class 3 I'll just go elsewhere.
