Does anyone else think MG's are like meth?  It seems me and all of my friends who own mg's don't get into them forever, and then you buy one, you get it, shoot and start looking for another......and in a very short time you have a few and are addicted to looking for more.

I have friends who used to have some MG's and sold them all for various reasons and have none.

I don't think I know anyone who has just one and is happy with that.

MGs are a gateway drug!

I have never tried crystal meth.  So, I really can't compare - legally owning a $10k machine gun or breaking the law and building your own for a couple hundred bucks.

OK, well I didn't mean compare, to that since I wouldn't know either, it is just something I read is highly addictive.  It just seems like everyone I mnow who buys one machinegun becomes instantly addicted to buying more and more...

I only have one MG (M11/9) and the addiciton is pulling at me, but alas it's a one income home w/ a baby so I can't afford anymore expensive toys for myself.  I however will be getting the Lage M11/22 conversion when my number is drawn and the M31 upper.

Give it time.

That happened to me back when I started, in the Dark Ages. Always had more forms in the NFA Branch pipeline, always seeking the next deal ... yup, an addiction.

Then about five years ago, I looked around and realized I had so many MGs/parts/mags/accessories/ammo, I needed a bigger house.

The money wasn't an issue but the sheer volume of "stuff" was a PITA ... particularly when I realized the only MGs I had shot in years were my M16A1 and my Uzi. I felt like my collection owned me, instead of the other way around. So rather than buy a new house, I sold off all the other MGs, mags, accessories, etc. For a nice profit, BTW.

OTOH, everyone else I know buys guns and keeps 'em forever ... and their widows/kids/estates get to deal with selling off most of them. I decided I didn't want that for my heirs.

So while I don't fit the "one MG" rule, I'm much happier today with "only" two MGs (and a ton of ammo etc. for them) than I was when I owned a bunch. I miss 'em, but if I had 'em back I would still only be shooting the '16 and Uzi, so I'm glad they are all with new owners who love and exercise them regularly.

+1, except I started the habit with a couple SBR's, then was lured to cans, and then couldn't resist the temptation so I finally jumped off the deep end into MG's.

... and I blame all of you $%&$@'s on ARFCOM for getting me hooked in the first place.  I was just fine with my semi-ARs but no, that wasn't enough; ya'll had to introduce me to the joys of Class 3 ownership.

I don't have a huge desire to add to my collection as much as I used to.   I think you reach a point where you just have more stuff that you can reasonably shoot.

Dont get me wrong there are a few guns that will eventually be bought to fill in the holes from a collection standpoint that I really don't like much from a shooter perspective like the AK and Thompson and for some reason I have always wanted an AR70.  But my drive to go out and buy more NFA or guns in general isnt what it was say 3 to 5 years ago.  I have also reached a  storage size limit until I buy a second or bigger safe (unless its a pistol), and there is nothing exciting or fun about a purchasing a another big metal box.

About the only thing I am even remotely excited to add as a "shooter" to the collection is one of the new MM23E, specifically the shorten K variant.  Just not sure if I am $12K+ excited about it.

Actually been starting to find myself browsing the sports car classified ads more and more over  the MG ads the past year or so.

So to answer your questions while it is addictive at first, give yourself 10 years or so and the hold it has starts to wear off.

Exactly the way I see it.

The initial hype wears off and you again make room for your other hobbies.

But you still get a great feeling every time you think of what sits in that safe - knowing some real cool stuff's in there!!!!!

Also, like Tony, I tended to pear things down after initially getting into NFA and buying all kinds of stuff.

I went from 4  MG's to just one (factory Colt M16-A1) and am concentrating on it and expanding to other stuff such as precision, lever-action, etc .............

Bought my first MG back in 1990, an MP5k from Bill Fleming. Then found out about getting an FFL then a C3. Oh man, seemed like everyday UPS was at my house. Had the C3 from 1990 to1994 and went thru several transfers, never really made a living at it but sure was fun and got to meet a lot of interesting people and got to get severalMG's tax "free". I remember buying Portuguese .308 brass cased ammo at $140.00 x 10 cases. Still have three cases in box. Tons of accessories for the current ten MG's I own and eight "cans".

Kind of funny, of the 10 MG's

Colt M-16A1
Bushmaster/Sendra M-16A2
Tec 9
PS MAC10
PS M-11
Polytech AK-47
Stemple 76/45
HK51k
HK21
Pre '86 MP5

I seem to shoot either M-16 with a .22lr conversion kit installed mostly Maybe I should sell all my MG's and just get one full auto .22

Now, wheres that lighter?

As of 2008 I didn't own any MG's, I owned one AR15, a bushmaster, and one or two pistols. It was a very slippery slope, proof as of where I sit now.
