Hey,
I will be getting finger printed shortly and will be sending in the application soon after that, for a 10.5" AR, but don't want to make a complete a** out of myself on the application. My question: Is it legal to BUILD a FA-SBR? And if I remember correctly(don't have the app in front of my right now), they ask for a description of the firearm; how detailed of a description are they asking for?

Thanks,
CU

I'm going to assume by "FA" you mean full auto, and the answer is no, unless you have a FFL/SOT.

Description - you'll be filling out items a through i like it says on the form.

i'm using my last Form 1 as an example

a. name and location of original manufacturer Lewis Machine & Tool Co, Milan IL
b. type of firearm to be made short barreled rifle
c. caliber (primary caliber only) 5.56mm
d. model defender 2000
e. length of barrel 10.5"
f. overall length 29"
g. serial number LMT12345
h. additional description (intentionally left blank, there is nothing required here)

Thanks guys, I appreciate it! One more question, I don't have any parts for it yet, so obviously best thing to do would to at least buy JUST the lower for now so I can fill out the serial number on the application? Only asking this as, with my luck, I would buy both  upper and lower, and be accused of having an illegal unregistered firearm, even if I haven't pinned the two together....correct?

Thanks again!

you need the lower before you fill out your application. the form 1 asks for a serial...

and no, you can't buy both first. if you could legally buy both without having paperwork, nobody would bother doing the paperwork.

Some suggest you go ahead and do the engraving on the lower before sending in the form in case something goes wrong with the engraving.  Lost in mail, name misspelled etc.

You need to read the Form 1 sticky.
