I'm getting a trust finalized hopefully soon, so I'll be sending in the paperwork for my suppressor right after that.  What payment method should I use - money order, certified check, start a checking account for the trust and send a check from the trust?  Something else?

I sent in a personal check easy way to track payment (form 1 individual)

Personal Checks are easier to track, however I always have sent US Postal money orders.  I don't know if they wait for personal checks to clear or not I just never wanted to take the chance if they do.

So how would a personal check work since I'm getting it through a trust?  Would I send my own or open a checking account in the trust's name and send a trust check?

The Man just wants $200. They don't care who's name is on the check.

I send MOs. I don't think the method matters.

the wait to pending and approval is much longer then the wait for a personal check to clear they cash the check immediately upon receiving it and then you wait months for approval

I know the wait is long, but what if they hold the prints, or some part of the process till the check clears?  I know they kicked back my FFL paperwork when I paid with a "debt" Visa instead of a Visa.  They process it but it didn't go through, they ran the debt card the day before they mailed it back.  I sent it back with a MO and they took it and, the Visa went through 6 days later when the "system" (their words) re-ran the #, took about 6 months for them to refund my money.

Check maybe fine, just saying I don't want to do anything that may prolong the wait.

Really interesting take on the all the checks.  When I send in a F1/F4 personal check, it's usually cleared and posted to my bank account within a week of mailing - I ship the envelope first class, and it clears much much faster than if I pay my buddy with a check & he cashes it same day.

YMMV, I reckon

I'm new to this, but I am looking at my trust paperwork and they specifically recommend opening a checking account in the name of the trust and paying with a check drawn on the trust.

sounds like a lot of extra work to me if that is all you would be using the Trust for, minimum balance etc...

That's along the lines of what I read somewhere (no idea where though), that's what got me wondering.  I know it's more difficult to track, but I think I may go with a certified-mailed money order.  At least that way I'll know if they receive, as I'm sure they'll cash it as soon as they get their grubby greedy hands on it.  I'll wait for more info and responses before I make a final decision though.  Still have some time before I get the trust done

Since 2001, I've used personal checks, 100% of the time.

Built in, free, delivery confirmation too when it clears the bank :)

Technically the tax is on the transferor (the seller) anyway, so they "should" be the one paying; but like thay said above they don't care who pays the $200, just send a personal check and be done with it.

I have been told by my lawyer that you can pay with a personal check, but sometime in the near future he feels that they are going to start questioning the personal check with a NFA trust purchase. He recommended that if / when this happens to use a USPS money order and not worry about a checking account for the trust...

I paid by personal check on my first form 4. Cleared the bank rather quickly. My second form 4, Gemtech paid the tax under their "Gemtax" program last year. Uncle Sam just wants some money.

This was my line of thought.  I'm surprised they don't already mandate that a check be from an account under the trust.  But I guess they want the money any way they can get it...

Again the tax is the SELLERS tax not the PURCHASERS so technically the trust purchasing the gun isn't even supposed to be the person paying the tax.

as stated before The Man does not care who or how they get the money as long as they get it I don't think there is right or wrong way to pay the tax and there are multiple was it can be done I think the best is what the payer is most comfortable with. a personal check works for me but may not for others

ETA:
I didn't know they accepted debit/credit cards I learn something new everyday

Just for clarification, this is for FFL applications ONLY, not tax stamps.
