Guys, This is probably and general and known question but when I complete an SBR build can I reengrave the receivers serial # with my name and address in a different location?? The receiver I am trying to use will have the origional serial # partially removed so I am needing to know this info before I proceed with submitting paperwork. Thanks to all.

You can't partially remove the original serial number.

Back in the 1970s there was a company (Lueder Seecamp I think) that did double action conversions to 1911s.  They had to relocate the serial number because they had to machine a slot where the original serial number was factory stamped.  So... there was a way to relocate a serial number WITH batf approval.  I don't know the procedure, or if the law has changed, but if you contact the technical branch of ATF they might be able to answer the question.

If your talking about moving the whole serial number to a different location on the receiver, I dont think there is a problem.
I am having a custom Mauser (Argentine 1909) being built and I had the serial number moved to the rear tang groove, and the original serial number markings ground off. This is normally done in some custom made rifles. As long as the serial number is in plain view, I dont see a problem.

With HKs, the rule was you could not remove the serial number from the weapon at any time, so the smith would have to cut a long strip across the reciever, bend the strip in such a way to get the serial number to its new location, tack-weld it in place, cut the strip and finish welding.  The reciever would then need extensive welding to repair the cuts. These were on registered transferable MGs converting them to belt-fed IIRC, so all the effort was worth it.

You are allowed to designate your own serial number when SBRing a gun, you're not required to use the original, but I'm not sure if you can remove the original one after SBRing it with a new sn.

It is possible to remove and remark the original serial number of a firearm, with WRITTEN APPROVAL on a PER CASE BASIS from the BATFE.  Whether BATFE will approve any given marking variance request is up to them and them alone.

Given the last decade or so of history on marking variances, BATFE is not in a very approving mood any longer, but hey - it could still happen, I guess.
