First time Class 3,

I ordered a new Colt 6933 SBR, it is now at my FFL, I'm waiting for the call to go down and start the paperwork process.  A few questions:

1)  What form is used, a Form 4?

2) Is there a need or desire for a Trust?   What is it related to a firearm and  When does that apply?

3) Is engraving needed, or is that only for a Class3 weapon that is being 'manufactured"?

4) My FFL has had the weapon for 15 days, I called aq week ago and he said he would call me when he was ready for me to come down.   What exactly does he need to do prior to my arrival?

Thanks all..

First time Class 3,

I ordered a new Colt 6933 SBR, it is now at my FFL, I'm waiting for the call to go down and start the paperwork process.  A few questions:

1)  What form is used, a Form 4? yes, it's a transfer to you from a dealer

2) Is there a need or desire for a Trust? I would only do this if you can not get a CLEO sign off or a Corp/LLC is not for you.   What is it related to a firearm and  When does that apply? I believe it means the Trust/Corporation is the legal owner of that firearm, and only those in charge or a member of the trust or LLC can use that firearm.

3) Is engraving needed, or is that only for a Class3 weapon that is being 'manufactured"? Only if you are manufacturing it ie Form 1

4) My FFL has had the weapon for 15 days, I called aq week ago and he said he would call me when he was ready for me to come down.   What exactly does he need to do prior to my arrival? They should have already requested all the information from you at the time you asked them to do the transfer for you, all personal information that you would fill out for a driver's license or more.  Shouldn't take them longer than a couple of days to make sure the Form 4 is filled out with the correct information and provide you with them, finger print cards etc. for you to complete and return back to them.  Considering from what you said you don't know which route you are going Individual or trust/corp route yet, they should have known this before you even purchased the SBR

Thanks all..

2) Is there a need or desire for a Trust?   What is it related to a firearm and  When does that apply? A trust is used(by most) when you live in a jurisdiction which will not give CLEO signoff. It allows the trust to purchase NFAfirearms without the need of CLEO signoff, and fingerprints.

3) Is engraving needed, or is that only for a Class3 weapon that is being 'manufactured"? No, only for "manufacture".

4) My FFL has had the weapon for 15 days, I called aq week ago and he said he would call me when he was ready for me to come down.   What exactly does he need to do prior to my arrival? Enter his info., and the firearm info. on the form. Maybe he is shooting it.??
Thanks all..

Pete

Darn, beat again....

Thanks guys....   As you can appreciate, a lot of moving parts and pieces the first time.   I have another call into my FFL to see what's going on.  I purchased the new Colt at Clyde Armory and found a local class 3 FFL to do the transaction (the FFL I've used for 25 years no longer has Class 3).  When originally speaking with my local FFL on the phone he said he did not need any info from me at that time to start the process, he's now had the weapon for 15 days...

What's the "C" in CLEO?    "County" ?

Appears I would only do a trust if I receive local pushback, correct?

More to come.   thanks again.

C is for Chief.
I'd consider going down with a blank Form 4 and starting the paperwork with the dealer.  I've heard of more than a few that like to shoot the incoming toys without telling the buyer.

Since the Colt will likely be sitting there for another 3-4 months, not much I can do to prevent them from firing it except to tell them that if the weapon is fired, they bought it.   My FFL said the owner is out of town until Wednesday, they will call me then.   Thanks all.

what does that mean?

once its transfered to them and in hand, it should take approximately 3 minutes for them to fill their portion of the paperwork out in order for it to be ready for you to come down and start working on your part.
individual/trust/corp/llc/whatever

I'd be irritated by the stalling/speed in which this transaction is taking place for you.  seems like they're dragging their feet.  which isnt "illegal", but isnt very good customer service.

ETA: in order to "start the process" on their end, no, they dont need your info since it has to transfer to them first.  however, in the interests of customer service, waiting 15 days to start your paperwork is pretty shabby.

Yea, I can't disagree.   He said that his 'boss' is out of town and needs to sign the paperwork.  I'm like WTF, let's do it and he can sign on the back end.

On another note.  Given that the gun is at my FFL, I've done no paperwork on it, can I effectively sell it (ie; let someone pay me for the gun and have it transfered into his name) so long as the buyer works with that FFL on the final transfer?   I't only been 6-7 weeks, I'm growing weary of the process already and haven't even started the lengthy part..

A cable lock, that you supplied, run through the action would keep them from having fun.

Is there a need or desire for a Trust?

There shouldn't be a need for a trust, since you can get a CLEO signoff from the Maryland State Police...
