Hey folks, I am in the military and currently have 12 more years of service. I am forever moving from post to post and been deployed 3 times already. I am currently stationed in Ft Knox KY but will be moving in a year, don’t know where yet (Needs of the Army). Ok, well here is the deal. I own many of rifle and pistol but am starting to want to own a SBR or even maybe a can or two for the SBR and or some pistols. With all the moving and deploying would I be transferring my butt off? I was told by a friend it would be better to wait till I retire some where when I am more settled. That’s 12 years away though... By then guns I am sure will probably be illegal!!! lol Any Class 3 Military folks out there that can offer some advice?? By the way I am Active Army.

Assuming your new post is in an area that allows class3, there are no extra transfer taxes, just file a form with ATF to say you are moving them.

I'm in the Coast Guard and own 1 SBR and 2 Suppressors. One for the SBR and one for my .22's. It's worth it I think.  It all depends on where you are going to end up.  For me, I get to choose where I am going to be going for 3-4 years at a time...as long as there is a job open there, I can go.  With my rating I can easily stay anywhere from VA to FL over to TX and pretty much all of those states will allow me to have my toys with the rare exception of AL which doesn't like SBR's (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
BTW I've got 14 years left so I hear what you're saying. IF you end up going to a state that doesn't like the whole NFA game, you can keep them locked up in a safe at a relatives house.  The just can't have the combo or the key. I hope that helps

I know you can own suppressors in Al, so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to own an SBR.

You are correct - Alabama doesn't like SBRs (or SBSs):

Section 13A-11-63
Possession, sale, etc., of short-barreled rifle or short-barreled shotgun; applicability of section.
(a) A person who possesses, obtains, receives, sells, or uses a short-barreled rifle or a short-barreled shotgun is guilty of a Class C felony.

(b) This section does not apply to a peace officer who possesses, obtains, receives, sells, or uses a short-barreled rifle or a short-barreled shotgun in the course of or in connection with his official duties.

(Acts 1982, No. 82-430, §2.)

as it was pointed out and linked to the regulation that covers SBS and SBR they are not allowed in AL.  However there has been and is a current effort to push for amending that part of the regulations to allow them.  Check out the Hometown Gulf states(which AL is part of) forum, check back about 2-3 weeks and you might find something there.  I'll try to bump it up to the top after this post.

I was curious about this, as I have the possibility for moving around a lot, as well.  If I'm able to keep any NFA items at my folk's place I'll be ok.

From the horse's mouth:

www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#m22

(M22) If an individual is changing his or her State of residence and the individual’s application to transport the NFA firearm cannot be approved because of a prohibition in the new State, what options does a lawful possessor have?

NFA firearms may be left in a safe deposit box in his or her former State of residence. Also, the firearm could be left or stored in the former State of residence at the house of a friend or relative in a locked room or container to which only the registered owner has a key. The friend or relative should be supplied with a copy of the registration forms and a letter from the owner authorizing storage of the firearm at that location.
