Ok, I have had my GSG with  an approved Form 1 for a couple months now and I am gonna ship it to Gemtech to have the conversion done.  I am nervous to ship my NFA item and also cant find a cardboard box big enough.  Has anyone ever shipped there firearm is a hard case is this smart of should I find a box.

ETA: I understand that I would insure it and also send it next day.

As I understand it:  Right now it isn't a NFA item as nothing has been done to convert it into a NFA item.  It's still a Title I firearm.  Until it's acually converted, it's a Title I firearm.

As for shipping, I'd take it to a UPS store and have it boxed there.  That way, they're responsible for the damages if anything gets damaged.  I've sent a couple of rifles through the UPS store and everything has come out great.

Just curious and maybe someone can educate me.  A form 1 is for a person to manufacture a NFA firearm.  How can you file the Form 1 and then have someone else convert the firearm for you?  This would be like me getting a Form 1 to convert a AR into a MG then send it to Sendra or Olympic to have the conversion done.  This would be <86 of course.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you're trying to do.

ATF recognizes that the average person does not have the equipment to professionally shorten a barrel.  It has long been acceptable to submit the Form 1 yourself and then have a professional do the shortening.

This is correct and the ATF looks at this firearm as a NFA item since the Form 1 was approved it is on the registry.

As an fyi- send a copy of the approved Form 1 with the rifle so that it can be sent back with the SBR and/or the company can make sure everything is all legal.

As for shipping I have sent rifles in their original factory boxes, a plain brown box, and on occasion a hardcase. Sent by UPS via Next Day with delivery confirmation and never had a problem.

One hint to get it into a "normal" box is I have also broke down my rifles, bubble wrapped them, and sent them that way. If any smaller parts, pins, etc are loose I simply bag them in a plastic zip-lock and tape it to one of the bubble wrapped parts. You may want to consider doing that (this also "hides" the overall length thus potentially lessening the steal me factor).

Thanks that is good advice I thought a hardcase would have a certain steal me factor.  So I think that I will break it down first.

If you're afraid of damage, put it in the hardcase and inside a plain cardboard box. If you have a good repour with a local dealer, ask them if they have any rifle shipping boxes they are going to throw away- they usually do.

I wouldn't worry too much about it being lifte from a UPS facility (hub)- UPS uses a single point of entry/exit (seperated lanes for each) for employees and a courthouse style walkthrough metal detector on the exit lane, I don't think anyone could get through unnoticed with something that big. Also, as an FYI, the UPS Store is contractually prohibited from shipping guns. They are supposed to go to the hub- though some UPS Stores accept them for shipment anyways.
