Is is legal to restamp a COLT RR (Marked AR-15) to M-16....simmilar to the way converted HK 94s are restamped MP5?
Has anyone done this to their RR?
Pics?

As long as you are not changing the original mfgr's "name, city, state and serial number"  I believe you are fine in remarking it to say M16

Would you need to inform the ATF of the restamp?

No.  It's merely a cosmetic change when you change the model marking.

FWIW, if the RR is a factory Colt full-auto marked AR15, restamping or engraving "M16" markings on it will decrease its market value by at least $1k, maybe more. If it's an AR15-marked Model 601, for instance, it would prolly reduce its collector value by at least $2,500.

If the RR is a converted SP1 AR15, it won't hurt the value ... but IMHO it's a bit misleading: An SP1 is not milspec. I can put Corvette badges on my Camaro but that doesn't make it one.

tony,

What are your thoughts on remarking an HK SP89 as a "MP5K-N"? I do not intend to sell it, but if I ever do, will that decrease the value?

It should actually increase the value. All transferable HK RRs are post-'68 conversions of HK semis, and HK buyers regard the remarking as part of the conversion process.

Because Colt M16s are domestically produced, you can buy factory-marked original Colt MGs. Changing those markings devalues the collectability of a factory gun ... and remarking an AR conversion adds nothing, because it does not make the conversion any more authentic. At least, that seems to be how the market views it.
