I am going to setup a RLT for my NFA purchases.   Every example I have seen has someones name as their trust such as Rob Smith RLT or Rob Smith Trust.   Could I call my trust something like Crossfire Trust instead?   Is there any legal issues with not using your name in the Trust name?

Sorry if this is covered before, but my searches never come back with anything.

Thanks!

No legal issue, just a tad bit harder to explain to LEO's that have no clue about NFA stuff without your name on it.  Hell, I have had LEO's at the range insist my 16" AR was below the legal limit of 18", until 3 more people walked in with 16" rifles  (Non-EBR).

I guess it is no more confusing then having a factory SBR with no engraving on it.  That one initially looks like you didn't follow the law since it only has the manufacturer on it.

If I am allowed to name my trust something other than my name, I will since my name is too long to fit on the front of the magwell.

Thanks,

I'm interested in this as well.  I don't really want to have my name engraved on the side of a gun, but also don't want to deal with the hassle of using an LLC.

Anyone?

Find someone with a Type 07 FFL / Class 02 SOT, such as Keith at NFA Investments.  An 07/02 can register your lower as a SBR on a Form 2 ($0), engrave it with his information, and transfer it back to you on a Form 4 ($200).

It has to be engraved with something if you are making the SBR and even if you have an SOT do it the SOT's info will have to be engraved.  If it is a factory SBR it still has the factory info engraved on it.  You can name your LLC or Trust anything you want.  I named my LLC after my dog.

That's what we're looking for.  I've never set up a trust and didn't know this.  No I/we do.  Thanks.

You don't have to put your whole name on their.  Initials are fine.  I've seen plenty of SBRs with "JEB RLT" or somesuch on the side.

I've also heard of plenty with no engraving at all.

However, I wouldn't recommend either option.

"RLT" isn't a widely-known abbreviation for "Revocable Living Trust" other than perhaps in estate lawyer circles.

If your trust's name is "your name revocable living trust," I'd suggest initials, last name, and "trust" for the engraving.  That makes it clear that it is owned by a trust and specifically by your trust.  Think of the word "trust" like the label "LLC" or "Inc."

I saw somewhere the name of the trust was In God We, and the engraving was In God We Trust.

Just proving that you really can be too careful when adhering to the ATF regs.

When the stakes are losing your NFA weapon at the least and becoming a felon at worst, I choose to tread lightly.

Tony_k has posted extensively on this exact thing before and I think his reasoning was quite sound, hence I repeated it here.  The fact remains that "RLT" isn't an accepted abbreviation for "Revocable Living Trust" in common usage.  Using the two-letter abbreviations for the state, as developed by the US Postal Service, is a different story.  I can walk up to any person on the street and ask them about a state abbreviation and they can tell me what state it is (barring the really stupid) from those two letters.

I've also read posts from an 07FFL/SOT who said that during an ATF inspection they were checking the engraving on everything with the stated intent of confiscating anything not properly marked.

Wagering an expensive weapon, or your freedom, on some jerkoff at ATF knowing what "RLT" means is a foolish plan in my view.  Your mileage may vary.

wow,,you ppl are really trying to make a simple process complicated. Just put your fucking name on the trust. It makes life so much easier and less to explain. If I have my trust as the Die-Tryin Trust and my name is Die-Tryin, there is no confusion, nothing to explain to anyone. You guys also need to be looking at the legal standings of Trusts, they act as a WILL. Keep this in mind, those doing a trust for the sole purpose of C3 is one thing. But ive set my Trust up to supercede my will and it should be treated as such.

You guys playing with fire are going to get burnt.

BTW; Almost NOBODY says RLT and Id bet nobody knows what it means.

That last line is exactly my point.

"RLT" is a meaningless abbreviation.

You might as well put SIIHPAPP on there.

My LLC is "Marley's Cache".
