I am currently a resident of a (mostly) non-NFA friendly state. Financial considerations are probably going to keep me here for a while, but I am still interested in acquiring a machine gun while I still have the opportunity to. If I was to establish a trust or corp. in a neighboring state to purchase NFA items, what would the best storage solution be? Things I have thought of: - stored in a safe in a trusted friend's house, inaccessible to them - safe deposit box (potential issues bring firearms into a bank I'm sure, but might work for a RDIAS or RLL) - buying property and storing it there (big security issue w/ being gone most of the time) - stored at a reputable dealer's shop Has anyone tried something along these lines? |

Your responses regarding safety deposit boxes are very encouraging to hear! Is it necessary to have the bank listed as the place of storage on any of the NFA paperwork? I have a trust with a WA address for my suppressor, but somehow I don't think the paperwork on an MG would get sign-off with that address if they don't have some kind of documentation that the item will be stored in a state where it's legal. |
If you create an out-of-state-based trust or corporation, that legal entity will require an out-of-state base address. Once you have that legal address for your legal entity, you do not need to notify BATFE or the actual address (the bank safety deposit box) where the assets are stored. BATFE would like you to tell them, but AFAIK you are under no legal obligation at this time to do so. |
