I have one registered SBR lower and one non-registered lower.
I have one long barrel (non-SBR) upper.

Given the above information:

How many same caliber SBR uppers can I have and stay legal?

or

How many different caliber SBR uppers can I have and stay legal?

I hope this is straight forward enough.

As I understand it, you can have as many as you like, as long as you
have a SBR (or pistol) lower to use them on. The exception being that you shouldn't
have any NON-SBR lowers lying about without  a +16" upper to use on them.

Someone should be around shortly to amend / correct me if I'm mistaken,
but this seems to be the generally accepted idea.

You can have as many SBR uppers as you want in any caliber, but you need a non-SBR upper for that non-SBR receiver.

The reasoning is that you have to be able to have a legal configuration.  Since you have a non-SBR lower, you have to have a non-SBR upper for each unregistered lower.

It is assumed that you will be within the law becuase you have a legal configuration, and not that you intend to build illegal SBR's.  If you have 42 SBR uppers, you are still legal since you can put that one legal one on the unregistered receiver.

However, with one SBR lower and one non-SBR lower, if you only had two SBR uppers, you could get in trouble, since the only possible configuration is an illegal one.
