Can i have a 3 position selector in a AR15 and it be legal?
If not is there a way to have the selector switch in the 3rd position and still fire?

Thanks,

J.W.

You could spend the money and get a functional M16 or conversion kit and then the 3rd postition selector would work fine and as intended.

You could have a custom made 3 position selector made where your gun is safe/semi/semi.

Or you could buy an airsoft gun.

M16 fire-control parts are not legal in AR15s.

I've never heard of it being done -- maybe an engineer could come up with a completely redesigned fire-control system that would allow it, but it prolly would end up being cheaper to just buy a registered M16.

Thanks,

J.W.

Well, do I dare to disagree?  The BATFE as written letters stating that they do not recomend using M-16 parts BUT that really isn't a law.  My Bushmaster M4 Carbine and my Bushmaster 9mm Carbine (it has a Colt upper on it) both have Modified M16A2 Fire Contol components to allow me to use the Carbines with my rLL.

This gives me SAFE/SEMI/SEMI when the link is not installed and SAFE/SEMI/AUTO when I use them with the link.  The parts I use are the M16A2 trigger, both disconects, selector, and M-16A2 hammer.  The hammer and disconects get modified for my use!

I have dreamed of someone, I even tried to do it myself, making a trigger that would go:  SAFE/SINGLE STAGE/TWO STAGE using the three selector positions.  The single stage would allow for quick double taps while the 2-stage would provide a higher quality trigger pull.

I would not really suggest doing this just to have the 2nd SEMI selector position but if there was a valid reason to do it...  I don't see problem doing it myself.

As for it never being done, that is EXACTLY what the Lightning Link selectfire kit does...  Just need to modify the disconect that works the burst cam so there is no hook... easy as pie!

Why?

(this isn't the first time that this has been asked)

because i have a engraved 3rd position on my lower that says mute and i would just like to be able to throw it over to that position as a cool factor.

Mute?  Like for shooting with your can attached?

That would be correct!!

QB, please do disagree! Everyone -- me included -- learns from open discussion.

FWIW, the "no M16 parts in an AR15" did not just surface in letters to individuals -- it was spelled out in revenue rulings and in an open letter mailed to all FFLs decades ago, when BATF discovered that some AR clone manufacturers were shipping their ARs with some M16 components. Such public announcements, from the federal agency charged with administering NFA law, can and do carry the weight of law. IMHO.

As you said, you have a valid, legal reason to do so (to assist the function of your registered, legal LL). I would not, however, recommend doing it simply to "look cool." LE, prosecutors and juries have a hard time buying that argument.

Like I said, I learn something here every day. I stand corrected.
