If I SBR an AR receiver, can I do it in any available caliber for that platform?  Would it then be legal to go from pistol config back to rifle?

What do you have right now, an AR-15 pistol?

Neither.  I want a 9mm pistol, but also want a 9mm SBR.  Would like to be able to go back and forth.

So basically, you want to be able to remove the buttstock from your SBR?

On occaison.  I want to go 10.5" & 5" (or 7.5") and add a suppressor.  Would be nice to have to option to go to a 5" pistol should I desire.

So is it legal once SBR'd?

That I'm not sure of, but I will tell you you can have multiple uppers for an SBR and the buttstock doesn't add length (because of the buffer tube already being there), and a buttstock would be extra nice with the added muzzle weight of a suppressor (would be way out of balance otherwise), so I don't get it.

I won't be using the suppressor on the pistol.

And can I register it in any available caliber?

If you register your receiver as an SBR, you can put it into a pistol configuration, an SBR configuration, or a rifle configuration, but it's legally still an SBR.

Cool.  I knew that once a pistol, if you added a stock it could never legally be converted back to a pistol.  Wasn't sure if the SBR status would affect that.

Cool.  I knew that once a pistol, if you added a stock it could never legally be converted back to a pistol.

The following is okay:
- Start with a pistol
- Remove the pistol-length barrel
- Add a rifle-length barrel
- Add a shoulder stock

The following is also okay:
- Start with a pistol in rifle configuration
- Remove the shoulder stock
- Remove the rifle-length barrel
- Add a pistol-length barrel

Just make sure you never have a pistol-length barrel and a shoulder stock at the same time.

I don't think that is correct.  After talking with the ATF, a pistol can never have been in rifle configuration.

Please read the AR15 Pistol SHORT FAQ.  I know it's confusing, but it's all explained there.
