Lets say you have an average Glock 17 imported and sold in the US. Then say you decide to have it converted to an 18 for a demo since Glock is being every so stingy with their post samples recently. At this point it is a registered post sample. If you were to remove the serialed trigger bar, thus returning it to semi auto status, can it be sold as a standard title 1 firearm to a civilian? I was under the impression that once it went MG it was forever non transferable but I'm getting different information from a reliable source. If this doesnt get blown out of the water I'm going to fire off a letter to the BATFE technical branch for an official ruling.

What do you mean by "convert"?  The G18 has a different frame/slide rail height, and I doubt you'd want to mess around with trying to alter the rails on the frame of a G17.  A much better approach to "creating" a G18 would be to just buy one of the post-sample FSS-G (or similar) attachments for the slide.  This little device is the post-sample machinegun, so you can easily remove it and get your pistol back.

I am unaware of any conversions that result in trigger bar being the converted and becoming serialized part. Most modify the slide or add a new backplate. I imagine that is the source of your confusion.

Technically, nobody I know of has ever modified a G17 to be a G18. Some, like DH, do a similar functional conversion, but I have yet to hear of anyone who modifies a G17 to G18 spec and the parts become interchangeable.

The non-slide conversion I have used use a serialized backplate that is the MG. So when it is in the gun it is a P86 gun, when it is out it is a regular G17 again.

Anyway, if in your example if the trigger bar is the serialized part, than yes removing it returns the gun to standard Title I status. The serialized trigger bar is the P86 gun, and will be until it is properly destroyed.

DON'T WRITE ANY LETTERS. Since you are not an 07/02 it is really not relevant to you any way. No offense intended.

Now that I think about it I'm pretty sure that DH did the conversion.  I'll contact him directly for further info.
