Hi All,
I just completed a Traditions Kentucky Pistol kit. It took longer than expected and I had to modify some screws to fit it but it was an enjoyable and educational experience.

I am looking to do a few more pistol kits before I take on a rifle. Do any of you have suggestions for pistol kits? I looked on Dixie Gun works and there is a Pedersoli Screw Barrel Pistol Kit that I may try, anyone have feedback? Some of the other less expensive kits had bad reviews on their site.

Any other suggestion where I can get some quality kits? On the Dixie site there are some interesting kits (duck foot, twister...) however the reviews are bad.

This hobby can be addictive.

Thanks for any help!

You had the same experience I had.  No more kits for me.

I'm about 3/4 done inletting a Lyman Great Plains Rifle. So far it really hasn't been all that bad.

We had to build the Traditions Trapper at school. We all experienced issues.  I had to re-drill the ramrod hole as it was way off.  Also had to file the bottom of the drum so as to allow the barrel and drum to sit right with respects to the lockplate.  The brass alloy used in the trigger guard was not readily solderable (to extend).

I built a Pedersoli Kentucky pistol kit....more or less fell together.  I spent most of the time working on the finish of the stock.
I did a Traditions Hawkens kit that was a bit more challenging...but with some work and attention to details..it finished up to be a nice  rifle.
The Traditions Kentucky rifle kit finished out nicely...but gave me fits with the two piece stock. Over all the kits with build up into a nice shooter...but be prepared to invest a bunch of time into them.

It's been a long time since I built a BP kit. The last one I did was a CVA .50 Kentucky Rifle. It went together well but it was rough and required a lot of final finishing and polishing on the metal. But I expected it. It is a kit after all. They are meant to be "built", not just "assembled".

I did just buy this flintlock kit from my neighbor for a winter project. With my long list of winter projects it may not be this winter, but it will get done sometime. The instructions are missing, but I'm sure I can figure it out.

If you've built a pistol kit already I'm sure you can handle a rifle kit. I've always liked the Hawken rifles, so that would be my suggestion. I would also suggest buying the best quality kit you can afford. After seeing the fit and finish differences between complete rifles from companies like Pedersoli compared to Traditions, I'd recommend the Pedersoli kit if you can swing it.
