Many years ago, before Thompson Center starting to ship their guns with Quick Load Accurizers, I had a friend cut
my barrel to 20 inch and put QLA (which is nothing but .5 inch of muzzle end enlarged for easier loading) on a lathe. It worked well but did increase blast. |

The Pedersoli Howdah "pistols" have 11 1/4 bbls...I got my .58x.58 from Cabelas.
I love the balance and fit of "short" muzzleloaders but my taste is for traditional. A couple that I have: 1) Richmond Carbine...basically a rifled .58 1861 Springfield with the barrel length reduced from 40" to 25". Sweet handling gun available from Taylor's and Co. 2) 1842 Springfield U.S. Short Rifle...basically an 1842 Springfield musket rifled and cut down from 40" to 33" (sometimes called the Fremont model). Since the barrel is fairly thin-walled (musket style) this gun is not muzzle heavy and is fast handling and well balanced. However....it is .69 caliber. I shoot round balls and Minies out of mine...shooting 750 grain Minies out of this baby is not for the faint hearted. Available from Cabelas. |

Pedersoli makes the Baker style coach gun, a short barrel double-barrel muzzle loader shotgun. The barrels are 11.5". I know very little about muzzle loading guns. Is this gun a class 3 weapon?

Muzzle loaders is not covered in the NFA of '34. No registration needed. With a muzzle loader you can have any caliber, any length barrel, with or without a stock. As long as you dont use a "firearm" receiver when doing so. Which means a regular AR-15 rifle lower with < 16" barreled upper that is made into a muzzle loader is still a no-no. UNLESS its a registered SBR lower Although its always a good idea to check state & local laws before buying or building anything. |
