Aren't bp cannon classed the same as regular bp?  Any special regulations?

I assume that you are referring to the grade of powder. Fg is considered cannon grade powder. FFg is for larger bore firearms. FFFg powder is for small bore rifles and handguns. FFFFg is only for priming the pan for flintlocks.

Rule wise they are the same . Nothing special about shooting them .

There is an actual "cannon" grade that is much coarser than Fg.

Fg is acceptable up to about golf-ball bore (1.723" - 1.750" depending on mfg.), above that I would use the cannon grade. Anything full-scale definitely should use cannon.

Good thing you're in UT!

Louisiana  has, and most LA residents don't know it, STATE-imposed restrictive laws on BP possession. A resident may "possess" up to 5 lbs of BP, no more. However, if you get a "cannon permit" you can possess up to 25 lbs.

If you are the "average" BP shooter/hunter, you'll not use more than 2 lbs a year (probably closer to one lb), so no worries. But some of us shoot a bit more, so keeping enough on hand sometimes requires careful planning/ordering.

Hmmm...

That would suck.

I have several BP artillery pieces, and can go through a pound in a weekend without breaking a sweat.

Never built anything that small (yet), but I've seen some really cool micro/pico projects made by others.

One guy made a working handgonne from a nail, that fired a single birdshot pellet (#8 IIRC). The 'tiller' was a toothpick!

The smallest thing I've made is a .25 micro-handgonne.

.250" diameter bore with a .188" diameter powder chamber, it fires a patched #4 buckshot pellet. The chamber holds 3.5 grains of FFFg.

It can also fire a plastic airsoft pellet, less damaging than the lead buckshot pellet but still able to inflict serious pain/injury at close range.

The lead pellet load is almost equivalent to a .22 short, so extreme care must be taken.

That's pretty cool,  now I need to convince the wife I need a lathe.

This micro I can't take credit for, it was made by someone else and given to me in 'kit' form (rough bed, no fasteners).

It's a Union-pattern Coehorn bored .690" diameter with a .250" diameter powder chamber. It can shoot lead musket balls, but I don't make a habit of that since it's 'mystery metal' of an unknown brass alloy. It has developed a nice patina, with no detectable corrosion, that's a good sign.

It also shoots paintballs, marbles when I can get the proper size, and suitably-sized fruit (grapes, cherries).

But it's main diet of late is corks.

Got this idea from a company (Beaufort Naval Armorers) that actually markets a small bronze Eprouvette mortar designed to shoot wine corks.

The wine cork mortar also shoots #7 stoppers. Since this one has a slightly smaller bore (.69 caliber vs. .75), the wine corks won't fit but #6 stoppers are perfect. The corks don't go far and as long as proper safety rules are followed, aren't much of a threat, but they do give enough resistance to get a good report with the tiny powder charge and stubby barrel.

Shown here on a $1 bill for scale, along with its tompion. I make tomps for my mortars because the short upturned barrels are perfect spider hidey-holes!

I had entirely too much fun with a cheap little field cannon from CTD on New Years, but now I need something bigger. Anyone know where I might find a barrel? I'm thinking a 36" golf ball bore would work.

Go to the Graybeard Outdoors Black Powder Mortar & Cannon Forum and check out their site sponsors and the references in the stickies.

Lots'a good info there and if it's available, someone will know where to get it.

The one thing to remember is that safety is priority one there, and if you are building a potentially unsafe design it will not be viewed upon favorably. And if you're buying, questionable products will not be recommended for purchase.

The Moderator. is a great guy ,he runs a fine site he is named DD .

I signed on there two years ago and a guy in Sweden has taught me to cast bronze cannons in my backyard .........

Good luck , Gary
