I know this is a simple question but why can't you use regular 209 shotgun primers in an inline muzzleloader. I've read the answer before but I didn't have a muzzleloader then. What would happen if I did use shotgun primers?

You can, but....

In some rifles, the stipp POP of a standard 209 can push the seated bullet loose before the powder / pellets has a chance to fully ignite.  This variable "seating depth" causes inconsistent chamber presures, and subsequently large deviations in velocity and accuracy.

The BP specific 209s are not as hot as the standard 209s meant for reloading shotgun shells.  There are also small rifle primer adapters shaped like 209 primers and machined out of brass that do the same thing.

Thanks. I've been shooting a sidelock but I wanted something that would go bang in the rain.

Federal 209A are too hot for BP.

Otherwise, if they are not specifically labled as being for 1) a .410 or 2) BP rifle, chances are they aren't going to provide the best accuracy.

The Remingtons I've tried gave me bloopers / inconsistent velocities / big groups.  I've never tried CCI.  Winchesters were what I shot before I switched to small rifle primers.

If you shoot a tight barrel / sabot combo it can be less of an issue.

I  shoot very tight sabots and bullets.
I have not given in to the powerbelt.
