Please forgive me with my ignorance.  It has been 15+ years since I was involved with BP and remember very little, except that it was fun.

I owned a Hawken (matte stainless with polymer stock) that was well made (bought from CDnn some years ago for $150 on closeout).  I do not believe the company is around, because none of the sites I have searched ring any bells.

ANYway to my question.

I am looking to start up with a HOBBY BP rifle.  My son is interested so I thought it would be be a great father son project when I return home from Iraq.

I am looking for the same type of simple yet well crafted BP Hawken. I am not interested in the following:

1.  The Hawken kit guns that as you assembled them did not fit so well together.
2.  Any of the new pellet powder, scope mounts or any related rifles like that.
3.  Unsafe Chinese gunpowder rifles made by prisoners.
4.  High end collector rifles

I also enjoyed the Colt factory Dragoon type pistols, but the price tag is of course ludicrous (becasue it was when I was selling them) which keeps me from purchasing one...

I apprecite any info and leads...

I guess let the flaming begin.

Thanks

Welcome

The consensus seems to be that the Lyman Great Plains Hunter is a good rifle. I have one in .50 cal and it is a good well made factory gun. I have some custom made muzzleloaders that I enjoy more though.

I suppose honorable mention could be the T/C Hawken, there are several here on the board that  speak highly of them.

I am not sure how old your son is but a .50cal loaded light could be reasonable for both of you. He might be better off with a .45cal.

Dixie Has most of what you need to get started.
Dixie Gun Works

There are other places but I can't think of them right now.
