I picked up at auction what I believe to be a all original DOT 1943 K98, bore is like new, as in I have never saw a K98 with a bore like this All numbers found match 1033V. All non numbered parts are of the correct type that I can tell, cleaning rod looks to be original late type. The stock is stamped 1033V in the barrel channel, and it has a dot on the heal of the butt. The handguard is not numbered, but is laminated. Replacement? Bluing on the rifle is very good, I'd say about 90% for this era of K98, cupped buttplate has some patina as most do. Has a original sling on it, in decent shape, all be it starting to age, and someone has repaired the end of the sling that hangs out the right side of the butt with glue.
I picked this up for what I thought was a steal, and I'm wondering what kinda ball park I'm in as far as value. I know pics help, but I won't be able to get pics till next week. Anyways, anyone with a copy of any K98 books, or any experts that can help me with what is correct with this model/maker/year or a value, please jump in |

Assuming it is completely legit, and all matching....on GB or something like that, it could well bring $1200 on up to crazy numbers...depnds on whose bidding and how bad they want it.
But geography and audience is everything when it comes to pricing... Could it go 2k+ on GB? It could, there have been plenty of plain jane matching commons that went for ridiculous money... Would I pay more than 1k for it....nope...where I used to live $1000 - $1200 was top dollar for a matching 98k...not that much interest, and not that much money in WNY...so if someone wanted to sell locally, you have to take that sort of thing into account. Down here in Dallas, the few I have seen at shows had crazy prices for mediocre MOSTLY matched guns...if they really sell for that much down here, I should start thinking a liquidating some....but, ahhh, who am I kidding I won't....
I will say its a minefield, 98k's are some of the most often faked guns out there now...dangerous territory for newbs... ETA I will do some checking in the references later, at home.... |

It appears to be all matching and original but the hand guard, which is un numbered, so I'm guessing a replacement from depot level. I was looking at the 1k mark for value. I'm on the fence, about selling it, as it's such a nice rifle, but I'd never shoot it, too afraid of damaging the sling, or denting the wood, ect.
It may very well go on GB. Will probably make a trip to a couple local gunshows first. |
