Picked up this Colt commando today for just over $600. Has the ordinance flaming bomb. Appears unfired, and the previous owner claimed he never fired it. How did I do.

From the dark pictures the gun looks good.
The grips are not "correct" for a Commando unless there is a chance the VERY early Commandos "may" have had pre-war commercial checkered walnut grips with silver Colt medallions.

Most all Commandos had brown plastic "Coltwood" grips.

The serial number is very low, and the Colt lookup says 1942, so it may be that these grips are correct. Regardless, I'll pick up a set of colt wood grips.

Cool. Gramps carried one as a cop outside of Boston from the 40's through the 60's. Evidently a lot of departments picked them up as surplus.

Before replacing the walnut grips check to see if the serial number is written inside.
As above, it's possible some of the early guns may have shipped with walnut.
Commando deliveries started in 1942 at serial number 1.

These are the type of grips the Commando came with.....Along with the original holster.

The plastic grips was one of the ways Colt made the cost per unit target. The Commando is just cheapened-down Official Police. Most were used state-side though some were issued to the Navy. 2" versions were also produced. Ike had one and it was rumored some 2" examples went to the OSS. There was a 2" flapped and US embossed holster issued with those.

Here is my Commando rig. The 6-round cartridge pouch is very hard to find.

Anyone know a good source for reasonably priced Coltwood grips, outside of the usual exchange, gunbroker, etc. channels? Like a readily available source.

The wood grips were added later then. It left the factory with the plastic ones.

Okay, good to know. That'll be the next adventure to get it back to original.

I'm also contemplating a Colt factory letter. If I secure one I'll post it here.

A Colt Archive letter would likely be a waste of money.
It would tell you when it was shipped and who it was shipped to, but that will almost certainly be a rather anonymous address like a government warehouse somewhere.
Once the gun hit the original shipping address there's no further records of where it went or who used it.

There are quite a few 6XXX Commandos in SRS. If you want to IM the full serial I'll look it up.
