I read a post recently where a guy said the slides break on P38s. I had never heard that before. I see that j & g sales has them and I am interested in getting one but only if I can shoot it.

No, but the rear sights do like to fly off.

I've put hundreds of round through my late WWII issue P38 and the worst thing that's happened to me is stove piping.

Perhaps he was talking about the story about how the forced labor would sabotage the guns?

Get it and shoot it.  These P-38s would have been captured and used (generally behind the Iron Curtain) for years - by police departments.  If the slide was going to break, it would have long ago.  I remember an opportunity to buy P-38s at the US Air Force Base at Rhein Main's Rod & Gun Club in Germany.  Had the guy behind the counter bring out half a dozen of them.  They looked OK, and were cheap.  Well under $250 if I recall.  This would have been 1990 or so.

P 38 slides can crack, cyq guns were the most common. But I still recall it was hot ammo and high round counts that did them in.

This is correct. If you are going to shoot it, use 115gr ammo. I use Winchester White Box 115gr in mine.

What in the wild world of sports are you talking about? This doesn't even make logical sense. Have you not ever heard of a concept called wear and tear?

what red baron said. Only use std ball 115gr.. no hot stuff. Doesn't matter the maker.. on p1s or p38s. The walls are two thin on the slide to handle it hot loads.. The Beretta 92 has the same problems.. but you really got to be working it.

Yep, most common reason we DRMO'd M9's in the armory. That and sheared off lugs where the locking block sits.

The wide slide P1 was an attempt to cure the P.38's slide cracking issue.

And as been said, only 115 gr. ammo, and never, ever any +P.

yep, they also switched to aluminium frames too on the p1s.. and had issues with cracking there to.  Hex reinforcement was added. Whether p1 or p38.. only 115gr std ball folks. No sense ruining a fine firearm .
