So I picked this up today to ship back home.  I know very little about it except this is the Calvary model and fires a .577 Snider.  It has a crown stamped into the metal with VR under it and II with 2 asterisks under it.

Any help you can give me in trying to learn more about it will be greatly appreciated.

This one came from "The Land of Rocks" too. You should be seeing inspection marks on the stock.

Here is my Canadian "Cadet Carbine", though I suspect it is a counterfeit one that is simply a cut down long rifle
done much later.

OP IMHO that stamp is faked as is the stock. Way to crisp a stamp and the stock looks too good when compared the condition of the metal. Perhaps it was a real carbine that they just made a new stock for.

That was one thing that I kept thinking about.  The wood looks way to good to be over 150 years old.

I am really hoping its safe to fire.  I am having a gunsmith that I trust look over it when I get stateside.

The mainspring is a replacement- the pin in the side plate should be round not square for original and the hammer is not original mark II either as they had an overhanging lip to help hold the action closed on firing. The mk III had a large locking bolt on the back of the breech block to hold it closed on firing after finding the mkII arrangement was too weak. Fair wall hanger would not shoot it.
My mk III I picked up in Afghanistan gets shot all the time

Likely some sort of shortened rifle as the cav carbine should not have the sling swivels. Get a copy of skennerton's book on the snider to guide you in future purchases if you plan to buy more. Still any decent French lebels there?

Sad to say I can't add much other than I have always liked the look of those little carbines.
I seem to recall IMA selling them from that cache that was found in Nepal.
Please report back with any findings and hopefully a range report
