I've decided that I really need a Garand but I'm pretty lost on picking one out as I'm not very knowledgeable on the different variations, grades and whatnot.

Is the CMP service grade the way to go?  Ideally, I'd like to have a rifle that has possibly "been there, done that" from the WWII era.  I'd like correct parts but it seems like those rifles will be beyond my budget.

Would a SG rifle get me close to what I'm looking for or should I play the auction game for a correct grade?  For what it's worth, I'd rather have something that may have been issued/used versus, say, a rifle that's in pristine condition but was made post war.

Thanks for any guidance/suggestions.

I have several Garands that I bought from the CMP and have been very satisfied with all of them. A service grade will get you a reconditioned rifle that is ready to go. It may or may not be WWII service range, but you can request a WWII rifle and they might pick through them and send you what you asked for. I wouldn't wait long. The pickings have been slim lately.

A service grade will fit your needs.  You can request a WWII serial number but there's no assurance you'll get one.

Either way, the CMP is the best deal going for an M1.

Right now, the CMP is only taking orders for HRA SG's.  If you want to have a chance for a WWII rifle, you will need to wait/hope for the Springfield SG' to show up again or buy one through another avenue.

It's always been luck of the draw and about order timing for M1's from the CMP. The condition varies a bit depending on the rifles they are unpacking and sorting.

If you want only one Garand I would suggest just getting a SG Special.

SG's have been a real hit and miss the last few months, you can get a very nice arsenal rebuilt SA or a put together POS rifle by the CMP that barely meets SG standards that in the past would have been downgraded to FG/RG based on overall condition.

HRA SG's have been worse lately , tired looking used GI....... or cobbled together from parts by CMP.

If you do decide to go HRA SG, order two or three and high grade the best one and sell others, it is the best way to insure getting a rifle you will like.

Service Grade is a great rifle for $625, spend the rest of the money saved over the Special on Ammo

I have never seen one Service Grade rifle that was so called   "HRA SG's have been worse lately , tired looking used GI....... or cobbled together from parts by CMP. "
This is just not true , I have handled many, many ,many hundreds of CMP Garands and never once has this been the case with the Service Grade.
Field Grades are deffinatly a crap shoot and would never take a chance on one mail order

I was about to say that they were still offering SA's, but sure enough, now they're only offering HRA's. Glad I got my SA SG in before they ran out. It showed up yesterday:

Looks good!  I have some orders pending.  I'm hoping I'll get lucky and get the offer to switch over to a Winchester on one of the pending orders.  There are reports of this happening to a few lucky buyers.  I'm also waiting patiently for the Harvesters to get listed so I can overnight my paperwork.  To the person stating that they are shipping out cobbled together Garands right now, I call bull.  I have received 2 nice LEAD rebuilds and a beautiful HRA with GI wood in the last few months.  Sure, there is an occasional Garand that is not as nice as the others, but this is definately the exception to the rule.  Buy with confidence and be glad to own such a fine firearm!

Thank you for the replies gentlemen.  I guess I'll have to start monitoring the CMP.  How often do they receive/unpack new rifles?  Is it something I should watch daily and be ready to pounce or is it slow moving?

So if I want the best chance at receiving a WWII rifle, Springfield is the way to go?  What serial range am I looking for?

I think the WWII Springfields were up through 3.8 million.  All Winchesters were WWII.  ALL International Harvester and HRA rifles were post WWII.  It will probably be about 2-3 months minimum before there is a chance for the mail order Springfield rifles to show back up.  They are constantly removing rifles from crates and grading them, but they are mostly going to fill backorders.  I would offer to act as an agent in late March if it were something that you are interested in, but there is no guarantee that they will have any on the racks at that time.  If you are interested in that, do some research and get your stuff together, it won't cost you anything.  Send me a pm if you are interested.

Thank you for the offer!  It's definitely something I'm going through with and late March (or later) would work out fine as that gives me time to research and get all the CMP paperwork and whatnot in order.  I really appreciate the help.
