Hey guys, I just picked up some 30-06 AP surplus ammo at a gun show.  I've always wanted some, and I've planned to have my cousin remove the bullets, then reload them with new brass, primers, and powder.  I noticed there is an assortment of different head stamps and I wanted to run them by you guys, just to make sure I'm good to go, and also if any of them are foreign produced.  Request pics if you want them.  Oh, and one more thing, what is the weight on these bullets?  I've never seen a definitive answer to that.

SL 43

Thanks in advance for the help.

I would leave the 50's stuff alone and just shoot it, the 40's ammo is probably corrosive.

Awesome, thank you!
It won't hurt to reload the 50's stuff, will it?  The plan isn't to shoot all of this.  I only bought 40 rounds of it, so I'm probably going to shoot a few to get an idea of the accuracy, then seal them up and save them for...whenever.  You never know when you might need some AP.

Armor Piercing, M2 : This cartridge is used against lightly armored vehicles, protective shelters, and personnel, and can be identified by its black bullet tip. Bullet is flat base, weight 163-168 grains. Defense against the M2 projectile by name is one of the performance standards for Type IV body armor.[23] Wiki
I have some and it does have a little more recoil than standard M2 Ball.which is 152 grain

it wont hurt to reload any of the brass once fired,

just need to remove the primer crimp when you start reloading,

AP shoots good,  usually accurate stuff.

Before you load any up do a google search on loads for this type of bullet. I read up on it a while back, and even though the bullet is around 160 grains, the loading data is more like it is a 180 grain. This is because the AP projectile is a lot longer than a similar copper/lead projectile, and this increases pressures.

Why reload ammo thats perfectly good? I have about 400rnds of it but have no real place to shoot it so in the spam it stays.

Because this ammo was not sealed, at least not for awhile, so there are likely some duds in the mix.  Plus some of the powder is corrosive and I'll drop dead before I put corrosive ammo through my favorite rifle.  Also...because.

Primers are corrosive, not the powder. You do realize many billions of rounds of corrosive ammo were shot thru these rifles, yes? Just clean it properly and enjoy.

Just to clarify, the primers are corrosive not the powder.

Poster above got the round off while I was still typing.

Just to repeat - corrosive primers aren't green hydrochloric acid here.  It's a mild dose of potassium chloride salt.   Basically milligram sized dose of  table salt.  And salt attracts water and enhances corrosion rate.  And just like salt, extremely water soluble.  Corrosive primed ammo only causes problems when it's neglected.  And even with that, that's why they made M1 Gas cylinders out off stainless steel.  So that they could take neglect.

And heck, you don't even have an M1.  If all you have is a bolt action and the tube of the barrel itself to clean, life  is  even easier.

Take some hot tap water and pour down your barrel if you are really worried - that's what old timers would do.  It'll air-dry, though I prefer to hit it with a patch to soak up any corners.  Then clean your gun normally.  The military 30-06 rifles before the 50's saw many thousands of such rounds  - it's not a big deal.

When shooting corrosive, i would normally first shoot a couple rounds of non-corrosive to lay down a layer, and a few rounds of non-corrosive after,to blast things out a bit. And then clean as noted above.  Never had any detectable corrosion.

On another note, unless that ammo was stacked up in a hot port by the sea, there's no  reason to think anything is wrong with that ammo.  Corrosive primers were at one time thought to have an even longer shelf life than non-corrosive (though I wonder if that's just a myth).  Unless you are seeing bad looking brass, there is no reason to  not have confidence in that ammo.

Sorry guys, yes I know the primers are corrosive, not the powder.  You ever have one of those moments where you're talking to someone in real life while you're typing, and you type what you're saying?  Yeah that just happened, my bad, I was talking to my dad about different powders.

And I know about corrosive ammo, I have a M38 mosin that I almost exclusively shoot surplus corrosive though.  I just don't like putting shit ammo though a nice gun (nice in my eyes anyway).  I know it really doesn't make a difference, but I just try to avoid it.

The TW-53 and LC-53 are non corrosive. The TW-52 may or may not be corrosive.  They switched to non corrosive primers in Feb 52. The others are corrosive.

Haha I wish!  It's my goal to have one someday, but I no haz the moneys.  I'm in college so that takes up the majority of my budget.  I'm about to buy a CZ .22 to replace my dads, which I've been using up to now, then I'll be getting a pistol when I turn 21 in December.  I figure a Garand will be so expensive to shoot (because it's so irresistible), that the only way to afford shooting it is through reloading, and I don't have a reloading setup yet.

HOWEVER, if you would like to make a hard product donation to the "Get Derek a M1 Garand" cause, I would be amendable to that
