"Tombstone" outline, C up top, 13 on the bottom.  I've found a couple references to this certain cartouche on the interwebs but nothing explaining what it means.  Was hoping someone here could help shed some light on that for me.

Rifle is a 1940 Tula 91/30.  Imported by Century

Any help is greatly appreciated!

It's one of many unknown marks. I have two rifles with that marking on the wrist of the stock, both happen to be PU snipers in post war replacement stocks.

Soviet record keeping in the 1940s was, how you say, not so good ;)  Drives me nuts too...  Be neat to know what all those little marks mean.  Bet it would be a heck of a story...

A good site to check such markings is:

I didn't see your marking there.  You have something pretty rare I guess.

One of the "joys" of Mosin collecting, wondering what the hell all those marks mean.

Even countries with decent record keeping - like the US - have their share of unexplained marks on milsurps. 3GM-K, anyone?

When you get to countries like the 40's USSR, where record-keeping was lax and subject to "political fudging" to begin with, in combination with wartime stresses and copious amounts of vodka, it's a wonder that we know what any of those marks mean.

If it bothers you that much, perhaps Mosin collecting isn't for you. There are probably far more unidentified marks on them, than there are ones of which we know the meaning.

Like I said, it is unknown. There are countless Mosin markings that are unknown. Maybe you could find an old Russian arsenal worker who could tell you?

Well that's a bummer.  It's a really clean stamp so I was hoping someone knew the meaning of it.  Thanks anyways guys

Mad Mardigan and AKJP, no need to get hostile, I just wanted to know what the meaning of the mark on my newly acquired rifle was

No hostility intended and I apologize if it came across that way. We're all in this together.
