| I have an SMLE and a mosin I would like to start reloading for. Before I I start workin up loads, I would like to slug the bore. I seem to remember seeing a tutorial using buckshot pellet. Any help on how to properly slug the bores of these rifles would be greatly appreciated! |
| I used a fishing weight a bit larger than the groove diametre. I lubed it up with Bore Butter and started it by hand and then used wooden dowel sections and a rubber mallet to get it down until it came out of the breech. Then I used calipers to measure the bore and groove diametres. On the No. 5, at least, the five grooves make it difficult to measure the slug. There's a way to do it without struggling, but I don't know it. |

I am wanting to slug my bore as well. Here is a video I found about it.
Slugging a bore I have never done this before. My question is, is this damaging to the barrel? What about damage to the crowning? I feel like it is but i have no idea. |

As for damage to the crown it's possible. As long as you use a soft lead sinker/ball and make sure you don't hit the mussel with your hammer you shouldn't damage it. If you don't trust your self that much you can also slug a barrel starting at the chamber you do it the same way but it is more of a pain to do. Here is a writen out version of the barrel slugging. I've done mine from the muzzle, going from the chamber will be really hard to get it started into the rifling since you would have to use a wood rod to get it started instead of a plastic hammer. Unless your using a steel hammer you shouldnt do any damage to your crown. |
