OK, I'm looking to add a No1 or a no 4 to the collection.  I will be looking for an all parts matching rifle so I want to know how many serial no's were stamped into the rifle and where are they?

I know the No5mk1 has a sn on the left side of reciever, under the front end of the stock, on back of bolt handle and on the left side of the barrel.  Is this the same with the No 1's and the No 4's?

No. 4 Mk. I and Mk. I* rifles have serial numbers on the receiver - either the left side or on the left wrist - and on the back of the bolt handle. Some may have numbered barrels and forestocks but this is not definitive and it should not be considered unusual if no markings are present in those locations.

No. 4 Mk. 2 rifles have serialed receiver (left side), back of bolt handle, barrel, forestock, and magazine.

SMLE (No. 1) rifles have serialed receiver (right side knox form), barrel, nosecap, forestock, underside of rear sight leaf, and back of bolt handle. Only Ishapore regularly numbered SMLE magazines, and then only in the post-war period. A numbered SMLE magazine is a good sign of Indian ownership.
