I took my '44 Tula M44 to the range today. It shoots about 1 1/2" left. The front sight is already drifted a little bit left, from whenever it was shot last.
I've read on line that the M44 was designed to be shot with the bayonet extended. What does a bayonet have to do with shooting the gun ? Does it actually affect bullet path ? Could that possibly be the reason why it shoots left ? I've heard of some whacky things before, but that doesn't make sense. Any Thoughts ???????

Ok, here's an after thought. How much would bullet weight affect trajectory in a Mosin ? I was using Brown Bear, I believe, 210 gr. Most surplus ammo I see is 147gr.
Example: My AR carbine with a 1 : 9 twist shoots 55gr dead nuts at 50 & 100 yds. With 62gr it shoots high right. A Mosin has what twist ? 1 : 9.5 ? I think...... My 91/30 shoots great with surplus ammo. Hits just where I point it (without bayonet). So, question to the experts....Do you think if I use surplus ammo in the M44 it will shoot point of aim ??? Thanx.......... |

Different loads will shoot differently no matter whether it is surplus or commercial. For cheap shooting, but some small samples of each type of surplus you can and see how it shoots in your rifle. Then stock up on what shoots good groups. In my experience, the M44's will shoot to the left with the bayo folded regardless of ammo type. Some ammo shoots more left than other types, but always left. The heavier bullets will generally shoot only a little high if at all and the lighter bullets (147g) shoot pretty high. Sometimes as much as a foot at 100 yards. Extending the bayo will bring the group closer to POA,(center of target) but will still be high with the 147g surplus. I have had good groups with the Czech silver tip surplus, in the minty green boxes. |
