I took my '44 Tula M44 to the range today.  It shoots about 1 1/2" left.  The front sight is already drifted a little bit left, from whenever it was shot last.

I've read on line that the M44 was designed to be shot with the bayonet extended.  What does a bayonet have to do with shooting the gun ?  Does it actually affect bullet path ?  Could that possibly be the reason why it shoots left ?

I've heard of some whacky things before, but that doesn't make sense.  Any Thoughts ???????

Yes, both the M44 and the M91/30 will shoot to a different POI with the bayonets extended/fixed. This is also usually how they were zeroed. Try it and see how it changes for you. Or, if you're like me, just zero it without the bayonet.

It has to do with barrel harmonics. Extending the bayo effectively lengthens the barrel and therefore changes the harmonics. I have seen this with every M44 I have owned or shot, which is more than a few.

Ok, here's an after thought.  How much would bullet weight affect trajectory in a Mosin ?  I was using Brown Bear, I believe, 210 gr.  Most surplus ammo I see is 147gr.

Example:  My AR carbine with a 1 : 9 twist shoots 55gr dead nuts at 50 & 100 yds.  With 62gr it shoots high right.

A Mosin has what twist ? 1 : 9.5 ? I think......

My 91/30 shoots great with surplus ammo.  Hits just where I point it (without bayonet).

So, question to the experts....Do you think if I use surplus ammo in the M44 it will shoot point of aim ???

Thanx..........

It's possible. DIfferent loads will shoot to a different POI. It may or may not be closer to POA, however.

Different loads will shoot differently no matter whether it is surplus or commercial.  For cheap shooting, but some small samples of each type of surplus you can and see how it shoots in your rifle. Then stock up on what shoots good groups. In my experience, the M44's will shoot to the left with the bayo folded regardless of ammo type. Some ammo shoots more left than other types, but always left. The heavier bullets will generally shoot only a little high if at all and the lighter bullets (147g) shoot pretty high. Sometimes as much as a foot at 100 yards. Extending the bayo will bring the group closer to POA,(center of target) but will still be high with the 147g surplus. I have had good groups with the Czech silver tip surplus, in the minty green boxes.
