I was at a little mom and pop place that had a 1944 dated M44.  Metal looked good, shellac was missing in spots all over, IIRC it was counter bored, and a R Guns import stamp on the side of the receiver.  Price was 150ish.  Now how many M44's in 1944 was there?  Should I make the trip back down there (about an hour and half away)?
Thanks

IIRC, the '44 dated M44's aren't too rare. The '43-dated ones are fairly uncommon.

i'd go back and offer 125. if no go, 150 isn't bad.

1944 m44's are very common.

1943 m44's aren't.

i got lucky and got one about a year ago for 150. it is counterbored but shoots very well.

43's and some early 44's were used in action.  You may have a nice war relic.

So then what about a 1945?

according to some people in the General Discussion forum here, M44's saw no action, regardless of the fact that late 1944 and early 1945 was some pretty hardcore fighting in this little place called Europe    not quite sure how they figure that a country like Russia wouldnt ship their rifles to the front line ASAP... hell, at the Tula factory the workers walked right outside the factory doors and started shooting rifles fresh off the assembly lines at the Germans from what ive read.

My 1944 M44 has a MINT bore, and can shoot 3" groups at 100 yards with Russian surplus ammo... plenty accurate for that carbine...  awesome rifles to own. So, to the original poster, if you can haggle them down a few bucks, do it. but dont feel bad about spending $150 on an M44. people at the gun shows around here are trying to sell them for $250+

Unless it's a Tula M44 dated 1944. They only made 100,000 of them at the Tula factory that year. The 1943's are rarer and were the trials rifles sent into battle for evaluation.
