| I saw the other recent thread on who has 98k Mausers in stock but didn't want to hijack. There are 3 places that I can find that have them in stock right now. They are: (1) Southern Ohio Gun-$279 (2) Dan's Ammo-$329 (3) Wideners-$319. The price difference doesn't really matter, I just want a German Mauser that's in good shape. I've never ordered from any of these dealers, and I'm anxious to give my C&R its first use. In fact, I don't really know a damn thing about Mausers, I just want one. i do have this book called "Mausers of the World" or something like that which I'm going to start studying. I think i remember someone saying that SOG had a really good return policy, so that if I'm not happy, I could send the rifle back. But who wants to keep pissing money away for shipping? I don't know what to do. Any advice on this purchase, what to look for, questions to ask, or from which vendor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you! |

My best advice would be to look at a few factors.....
Make sure you get the best condition example possible. Buy the bore, the rifle is only as good as it's bore. Next try to get your hands on one with the best bluing and wood condition possible. Lastly, I would go with whichever vendor has the best return policy. Reason being if you buy one under their description and it turns out not to be what you had expected if they will allow you to return it then that is what I would do regardless of $20 worth of shipping costs. |

I recommend Allan's Armory. http://www.allans-armory.com/aaresult.php?PageId=45 |

Dans will select a date range/manufacturer to your request. You can ask for a "nice bore" as well, but don't expect much from a Russian capture. While there are exceptions, the bores tend to be pretty "dark" but will shoot just fine. Dans rifles look promising but the "signed in ink" requirement for FFL made me take a chance on Wideners k98 RC and Im pleased with it. |

Here are the pics (not cleaned). http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t65/flyboy1910/k981.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t65/flyboy1910/k982.jpg Is that from Dan's latest batch of RC 98k's?? Did you ask for a 1940? If I could find a vendor that would take requests, I was gonna ask for a 40 or 41' myself. |

I wrote "nice early war with decent bore" in my order notes. Got lucky with the bluing. It's a nice deep hot re-blue, not the rough Russian paint. Bore is mostly bright with good rifling, and some "frost" in the grooves. Still one of the nicer RC bores I've seen (most are pretty wasted). Shoots very well. |
