Ive been thinking about scoping my M91. Ive had it for about a year and im fairly certain none of the serial #s match correctly even though they are matching. If i was to slap a scope on it, how would I go about it?
Can I install a bent bolt handle without moding the stock? What kind of drilling and tapping would I need to do? Where can I get the mount and do I need a specific scope or can I use any decent scope? |

First off, if this is actually an M91 and not a 91/30, I would leave it alone. Actually, no matter what it is, you can probably by a repro sniper, or one that's already been sporterized, for cheaper than what it will cost you to scope the one you have.
But, to directly answer your questions: 1. Yes, you can install a bent bolt without modding the stock. 2. Depends on the type of mount you want to install. They also make scout mounts that attach to the rear sight, so you wouldn't have to d/t, nor would you have to mod the bolt, if using a long eye relief scope. 3. Again, it depends on what you're looking for. Most C&R guys would rather buy one that's already been ruined, than to do it to another one. |

Its just an M91/30 not sure of a distinction between it and an "actual" M91. I like doing finger work on my guns so installing stuff isn't a biggy for me. He brings it up because many M91s were updated to M91/30 specs and, as a result, there are the M91s are considerably more rare than the 91/30. From a value standpoint, the M91 is generally worth 2-2.5 times what the M91/30 is currently, but I expect that will change soon. Personally, I think they're undervalued is relation to their rarity. For that matter, I see many more formerly Finn owned M91s than Russian M91s. This might be a case where original Russian models end up being more rare than Finn models and, consequentially, more collectible. As for the project you're looking at, the easiest way to mount a scope on a MN solidly would be with a Darrell's scout mount. It replaces the rear site and will not require a bent bolt. It will require a long eye relief scope, however. http://parallaxscurioandrelicfirearmsforums.yuku.com/topic/36954/t/Scout-Mount-Ordering-Information-and-Current-Availibility.html I know a lot of older guys like this mount because it: 1) Allows them to mount optics on their C&R rifles when their eyes see the sights well enough to shoot accurately. 2) It doesn't make any permanent alterations to the rifle. Now, the D&T method, I know a lot less about. I don't know what mount would be best, but I do know there are places on the net where you can get a bent bolt or send yours in for modification. I suppose you could go with an original mount or repro mount, but those look like they would be a potential pain to mount correctly and will cost more than a top-mount scope rail. |
