With brass notoriously hard to find and ammo just as scarce and pricey, would this chamber insert, http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=650814, be a viable option for cheap shooting? I'd like to shoot my krag more often, but I don't usually have the time to reload my precious few cases, and even then, trigger time tends to be low.

Of course...all 7.62x25 I know of is corrosive...

Not in your caliber. They don't have a .30-40 insert listed.

I thought I'd seen an insert about a year ago that used some variety of small bore ACP cartridge, but I haven't been able to find it. The 30-40 cartridge is very similar in dimensions to the .303...but I imagine there would be headspace issues, right? Anyone?

Hmm...found this website; http://www.mcace.com/adapters.htm, no krag adapter listed, but I emailed them...this has the potential to make krag shooting a lot more frequent.

The inserts were used by the old timers mostly for small game and pest control with various pistol and other low powered rounds

Generally a PITA to use and in many cases the twist rates are inappropriate so that performance suffers.

If you search on line some outfit like Graffs will have brass for $50 or so a hundred which is steep compared to several years back
But if you keep the loads mild (good plan for the 30-40 at any rate) you should get pretty good life and a 100 rounds loaded should last you for a couple of afternoons of shooting

SAAMI has set headspace for the .303 the same as for the .30-40 Krag; The Brits and Commonwealth countries have slightly more generous specs for .303 headspace dimensions.

303 brass has routinely been formed from Krag brass for many years, although it does leave you with a slightly long neck - not necessarily a bad thing.  I suppose you could go the other direction, and live with the slightly short neck.

It's not all corrosive.  S & B makes new stuff.

However, corrosive ammo is the good, kevlar eating stuff, so long as you can actually clean your weapon after firing.
