| Im in the market for a 1903. I want a precision variant if the is such a thing. I saw a few good ones one the interwebs. If i get a unscoped one, how rare are the scopes and mounts? ( i mean the really long ones originally mounted on them). If i dont have my facts straight, please feel free to educate me. This is a new field of venture so be easy on me. |

| Do yourself and the rest of us a favor...if you do end up getting a 1903, leave it alone. You'll find they're plenty accurate with the iron sights. Don't drill and tap or otherwise alter a surplus Springfield or Rock Island. If you can find and purchase an A4 or other sniper variant (they are out there, but very expensive), great. If you just HAVE to scope a standard, use a non-gunsmith mount. Otherwise leave 'em stock. They're just getting too rare to chop up. |

The long Unertle scoped 03's were USMC. The Army's 1903 A4 had a variety of internal adjustment type scopes. Either variation will set you back $3-5k in today's market. Winchester A-5's, such as found on mid-war variants, can be found here: http://unertl.alexweb.net/for_sale.htm (#59 and #60). He also has a number of UNERTL scopes, |

It should be pretty easy to find an '03 that was sportized and drilled and tapped. One of the first ones I bought a couple years ago, when the Garand syndrome became 03 syndrome, was a D&T'd 1918 SA. It was in great shape with a nearly new '44 barrel on it. The barrel went on a minty Mark 1 reciever and a spare NOS A3 barrel went on the 1918.
I added a Redfield mount, a Lyman Alaskan, (one of the bolts on a rifle I picked up was modified to look like an A4 bolt) and a new stock with A3 bottom metal and now I have a rifle that looks and shoots like an A4 (from 10 feet away, you cant tell unless you really know what to look for) for about $500. Dont ruin a good 03,but there are plenty that can be rescued. |

A REAL USMC 8X Unertl will set you back just that for the scope. There an entire setup on Gunbroker right now for $18K but I don't think anyone is that stoopid. |
