How do you open surplus ammo cases? I know there are can openers for them, but I don't have one

If you mean the Russian type sealed cans, you can use a screwdriver or chisel to punch an overlapping series of slots around the extreme outer edge of the can.
Do this carefully to not hit the ammo inside. All you need is to cut enough to allow you to bend up one end so you can dump the ammo out. |

If you don't hear back from me, I hit the ammo

Dremel is to much work and the screwdriver and hammer is really to much work.... I like my way better, Less than 5 minutes and the whole lid comes off http://images18.fotki.com/v25/photos/6/60416/248274/Mvc009f-vi.jpg Take the grinder and go over the top folded edge until you can see the 3 individual layers of metal http://images18.fotki.com/v24/photos/6/60416/248274/Mvc010f-vi.jpg Now take your pocket knife( you do carry one right? ) and pop the lid off http://images18.fotki.com/v25/photos/6/60416/248274/Mvc008f-vi.jpg All done, Go load mags and have fun at the range. Jason That looks like it might be the quickest and easiest, but I don't have a grinder yet |

OK, here's my next question. How do you open cans like this?
Link to store It's my the type of can my 7.62x25 ammo is in. Edit to take out bad pic link and put in link to item at J&G |

If it is one of those Galvanized cans, there should be a key on it that you pull on to open the can up. This usually breaks. Best way to get these open is either a dremel or tin snips. Yeah it's a galvanized can from J&G sales with the tab. It seems like it would break off as you say, so I'll have to try something else. |

Edit to take out bad pic link and put in link to item at J&G I just opened mine with a pair of wire snips, there is a tab that is pretty clearly for the key mentioned. I took my pliers and rolled it back and it pealed off pretty easy. I then pried under the remaining lid until one side pulled up, then slid my hand underneath and pulled. The lid flopped off to the side, ammo is tough to pull out bit the case retains it shape and can be used to hold the unused rounds. |

I got hold of the tab with some vice grips then stood one foot on the can to peel it off. It took some muscle, but once it started peeling, it wasn't too hard to pry it off. |

have you ever eaten Spam? If so that is how the soldered shut cans are usually opened, take your vice grips and clamp to tab and wind away.
Mountaineer, Go to Harbour Freight and buy thier 4 1/2" Grinder. It can usually be caught on sale for around $20 bucks then another $5 for grinding disks Jason edit: fixing typos and adding info |

Opening a case of ammo is one of the saddest experiences I face in life. I want to keep on those little guys all safe and secure in there, packed away like they were in 1917, 1940, 1952, 1966, 1977, or 1986. If I had my way, I would just shoot ammo from other people's opened cases. But alas, that is too expensive. |

Not going to use it to open the can though.
