it is a 4.7mil number, Smith Corona and thats about it.

i may try and see if the number is anywhere in the archives to see if  can trace it back.

i will also be making a new stock for t out of a nice piece of oak i have in my basement (the original one will be kept around).

now, if only i could find some decently priced M2 ball

CMP is were I get food for 1903A3 and Garand, only problem right now is the wait-3 months. I expect they will be out of M2 ball in a year  but any 30-06 ammo is safe to shoot thru the 1903A3 and most 1903's. Exception being the low number 1903's. Enjoy your 1903A3 as it is a great rifle, mine has the smoothest action I have ever felt in a bolt action. I also have assorted Mausers to compare it to along with Mosins.

Check yourself, but I believe

Ammo : Citizenship, Age, Affiliated Club

Rifle: As above PLUS Marksmanship or other firearm related activity

And I think Military or ex-Military qualifies without further requirement.

I have to say that Oak has got to be one of the poorest choices for gunstock wood????  Personally, I think you should just leave it intact and let the parts get equal wear, but an 03-A3 will work well dropped into a sporter stock;  it's just not the same as shooting a Springfield though.

My SC 03A3 was the first firearm I ever purchased and I think I love it more than any other gun in my collection.  It shoots amazing (mw <1), and I believe is all original- the stock has been smoothed out but you can just make out the cartouches.  The pic isn't the greatest but here she is.

My 1903A3 is my favorite milsurp rifle.

It truly is a rifleman's rifle. I can knock down bowling pins at 200 yards consistently just leaning over the hood of my truck using M2 ball. The sight picture is a quick study if your familiar with AR15 Iron Sights like I was.

I reload for my 03A3, I really like 168gr SMK's in Greek HXP prepped brass with a healthy dose of Varget.

Truthfully, not bad at all. The rifle is a good weight and that helps kill the recoil, plus how you hold the rifle helps tremendously.

I may sound like a wimp, but if I know I'm going to be doing a lot of shooting during the day (prone for 3 hours or more is very tiring, ditto recoil and back strain from shooting offhand for a few hours), I usually take 2 Aleve in the morning, keep myself hydrated and I'm fine.

Recoil of the 03A3 is more pronounced than in the M1 Garand due to the different operating systems, but its nothing that bothers me as much as being prone in the hot sun...kills my shoulders and elbows (old football injuries).

The recoil is manageable and I prefer to shoot a few hundred rounds of M2 ball thru my 03A3 than 10rds of Federal TruBall max dram equiv 12ga slugs outta my 870 I don't do the chiropractor thing, but after 5-10rds of those Federal Slugs, I sure consider it for my neck and shoulder.
