This passed weekend me and a buddy took our new M44's out for some plinking.  I've heard about the huge fireball these things throw out, but for some reason mine had almost no flash at all.  We were both using Bulgarian heavy ball from the same case, my friends rifle had a HUGE muzzle flash.  I had no other problems, shoots straight and only one failure to extract out of 50 rounds, I was just curious as to why two of the same rifles firing the same ammo would have such a massive differance in muzzle flash.

Ammo that does not produce a 1-foot or greater fireball in the M38 or M44 is clearly defective.

Did your friend happen to fire your rifle?  I've found that the fireball can be very visible from the side, but not so visible from the shooting position.

He didn't fire it but other friends did, it reminded me of the muzzle blast from my dad's 18.5" 20gauge Mossberg.  I fired his rifle and the flash was very noticeable when I fired as it obscured the target.

Strange, mine did the same thing at first. It now shoots large fireballs. I have no idea why this is.

+1

Counter-bored barrels act like a flash hider.

Well, I just checked and my rifle is definetly not counter-bored.  It isn't shot out either as it passes the bullet test and was fairly accurate when shooting it last weekend.  Maybe it's just me, I also notice my CZ-52 doesn't produce much muzzle flash at night either and that's with both commercial and mil-surp ammo.

Now, my 3" Taurus PT-145 on the other hand...

Try some Hungarian heavy ball (yellow tip). If that doesn't produce eyebrow searing fireballs, then the rifle is clearly defective and absolutely no fun to shoot. Just extend the bayo and use it as a tomato stake.
