Generally each inspector had his own stamp that he used when passing parts as meeting spec.  BSW

135 = German WWII Heerswaffenamt inspector's mark on arms produced at Mauser Werke AG, Oberndorf am Neckar, Germany.

Thanks for the info. Can you recommend a good book/website on k98's specifically?

Also, what do you guys use to clean the barrel? I have no cleaning rod and do plan on firing it. Thanks.

Well a good book on the 98k is Backbone of the Wehrmacht by Richard Law.  The Kuhnhausen shop manual for the Mauser is also good for the gunsmithing side.

I reload and no longer use any kind of surplus ammunition, so I just use regular methods to clean after shooting; No. 9 and whatever kind of oily stuff is around.

You could check the military mauser forum

or k98k forum

http://k98kpage.yuku.com/forum/view/id/1.

Just found them on a quick Google search, not really familiar with them....

Only 98k I have is a nice dou 44 that was bought about 20 years ago.  IIRC my rifle has 8 or 9 numbers, all the numbers you can see without taking it apart, matching.  How many numbers are there on parts that you don't see without taking everything apart?

Wondering if a 98k is like a WWII Luger, having many numbered parts visible, and several more numbered parts not visible until taking it apart.

This site has a couple 98k for sale with excellent photos of the rifles taken down to show the small parts inside and out with the serial numbers.  Think I counted 20 serial numbered parts on one rifle from 1941.  Thought someone else might be interested.
