I recently bought a shooter mosin. I was wondering if someone could fill me in a little. I am not concerned with value...I paid $50 for it,and it doesn't have one # that matches anywhere!

It has the octagon reciever  and the markings are:

a star with dots around it
                                               a bunch of crylic writing
                                                a date of 1925
the barrel is longer than my m44
but shorter than my 91/30.   the rear sight is different as is the front sight(non-hooded mauser type)
it has a dark bore but good rifleing
and is a fairly accurate shooter.                             thanks in advance

Here's a pretty good website, as far as information goes...

Hello gun,

Based on the info you provided, it almost sounds like a Mosin Dragoon model.  Most were re-fitted with newer sights after 1930.

Check out this site too:  www.7.62X54r.net   A TON of GOOD info listed here.

As long as you don't have headspace issues, don''t worry about the mis-matched numbers.  You have a "shooter', so go out and shoot it ! !

But . . . you've been warned -- these things are habit forming ! !   I've got 18 now, and just can't pass up Dunham's Sporting Goods store here in Ohio (they always seem to have a nice selection of C&R's at Dunhams') or look at every single one at the local toy shows.

thanks for the help!  I am 99% sure that I have the Mosin Dragoon. the pics of the rifle and the markings are pretty much identical to mine.

and yes I have fired about 20 rounds so far with good accuracy and it gave me a serios strawberry on my shoulder! I really need to get a rubber butt pad for my mosin's...that metal buttplate just ain't nice to me!

Small slip on pad will work fine.  Limbsaver or one of the others.

It also might be the rarer Cossak rifle.  I think the Dragoons were the same length as the 91/30.

I'd concur.

Can you post length and pics?

The Dragoons were, I believe, shortened to M91/30 length. I know my ex-Dragoon is the same length as my 91/30s.

Also check with this site. (7.62x54r.net)

There isn't a "Ka3" on the receiver, is there?

No "SA" in a box, either, right?

well I'm still not sure...the stock has been cut down(someones attept to sporterize???)so there is no barrel band to go by.
the whole rifle measures about 42.5 inches, and the barrel length is approx.22.5 inches. It's a Tula here are a few pics...

It was definitely a Dragoon.

It was probably never updated to a 91/30 and I assume the barrel was cut down when the stick was, too. I see no listing of a Mosin-Nagant on 7.62x54r.net that was 42.5" long. (46.5" 48.5", or 51.5") Maybe it's some weird variant, but I doubt it.

Neat old weapon, though, easily worth what you paid for it.

Yeh.. thanks for all the help. it is a fun shooter and I really wasn't looking for a rare one...but it would have been nice!

Its not really that non-rare.

By all looks, it is an original Dragoon. Most of them were updated to 91/30 specs at some point.

The barrel and stock are bummers, but it's still a fairly uncommon rifle anyway.

I'mstill trying to find out what this rifle started as... I found a post on another site that talked about mosins that were imported in the 70's and cut down and sporterized, and they also bent the bolt handle and swept it back. they refered to them as "Bear Finns" I have been googleing my ass off but can't find anything. also I did post the pic of the tang date...it matches the date on the barrel. here's a pic of the bolt handle...

Made at the Tula arsenal in 1925.  Very nice find.  Too bad about the stock.

Worse case scenario you could try and replace the stock with an original one. It looks like a non-updated Dragoon. Which ranks an 8 in a scale of 1-10 on 76.2x54r.net.

I can not really see from your photos, but what kind of front sight does it have? It it has the bladed style, that is pretty rare too.
